Bark 1859 at Tvedestrand, Norway by I. Tangen 194 kl — Holm & B. Broch , Drammen, Norway

In 1861 the bark Askur departed from Drammen on May 17th and arrived at the quarantine station at Grosse Île on July 12th. She proceeded to Quebec the same day. The ship sailed in ballast, and was carrying 3 cabin and 260 steerage passengers. There had been 3 deaths on the voyage. She was mastered by Captain C. Dechmann and had a crew of 13. Because the National Archives of Canada [NAC] did not start the archiving of passenger lists before 1865, and the Norwegian emigration records did not start before 1867, there is no surviving passenger list for this voyage in any of those archives. Timeline to records.

The two newspaper announcements are from Ringeriges Ugeblad in 1862. The first one is an announcement for passengers. It says that if a sufficient number of passengers enrolled, the ship would sail with emigrants for Quebec in April, as it did the year before. The ship was fast sailer and 1st classed. It would be mastered by Capt. Dechmann. The announcement also states that a recommendation from the passengers that sailed in 1861 was printed in the Morgenbladet on August 16th 1861. The second announcement says that the ship was going to depart on April 15th, and according to other sources she departed Drammen on Apr. 15 and arrived at Quebec on June 21. Like for the vojage in 1861, there is no surviving passenger list for this voyage. Agents were Aug. Christiophersen, C. Høstad and Holm & Brock. The owners of the ship also announced for passengers from Drammen to Quebec in 1863, but we have not found confirmation for the Askur doing such a voyage that year.

In 1866 the bark Askur departed from Drammen on Apr. 24th and arrived at Quebec on June 12th. She was sailing in ballast, and her tonnage was given to be 404 tons. She was carrying 198 steerage passengers and 3 cabin passengers. One child was born on the voyage. It was on April 29th, the child of Andreas Bjørgrud 27, and Ingeborg 40. Also this year the Askur was mastered by Capt. C. Dechmann, and she had a crew of 13. The passenger list for this voyage is kept at the National Archives of Canada [NAC]. The list has been transcribed and included in our database

In 1867 bark Askur (404 tons), Captain C. Deckmann, departed from Drammen May 5th and arrived at Quebec on June 22nd. She was carrying 212 passengers. She was the 54th Quebec arrival for 1867. The passenger list for this voyage is kept at the National Archives of Canada [NAC].

In 1870 bark Askur (403.49 tons), arrived at Quebec from Drammen in ballast. She was carrying 175 steerage passengers. One infant died of bronchitis; Mathea (6 mo.), daughter of Marthinius Andersen Smed (26½) and Randi Johanne (25). Another child died before departure from Drammen; Rønnov Marie (5), daughter of Nils K. Bargh (41) and Berthe Marie (38). ASKUR was mastered by Capt. C. Dechmann, with a crew of 13. The passenger list for this voyage is kept at the National Archives of Canada [NAC].
