A contemporary newspaper advertisement announced that the ship-rigged ship Catharine, under the command of Captain A. M. Wiersen, was scheduled to depart from Porsgrunn for Quebec on 1 April, provided that ice conditions did not prevent her departure. The vessel, measuring approximately 400 Norwegian commercial lasts, was described as a large, fast-sailing ship, built with copper fastenings. She had a spacious steerage deck (tweendeck) with a ceiling height of more than seven feet, as well as several cabin berths. The advertisement promoted the Catharine as an exceptionally good opportunity for emigrants travelling to North America, emphasizing that the ship would depart as scheduled regardless of whether many or few passengers had booked passage.
