The Winterflid was built in 1840-41 at H. B. Cappelen shipyard at Gimsø, Skien. She was a 396 gross ton vessel. There is often some confusion about the name of this ship, as in English sources the name is often spelled Winterflid, while in Norwegian sources it is spelled Vinterflid.
Newspaper announcement in "Skiensposten Dec. 13th, 1842: "Announcement. If a sufficient number of passengers signs on, Capt. O. Elligers will depart with the ship Vinterflid to New York in February or March the coming year. Those who wants to take advantage of this accommodation is asked to make contact with the undersigned, where conditions will be given. Note that those who take advantage of this accommodation most likely will arrive to America in time to be able to complete the inland voyage early enough to make preparations for the coming winter, and maybe be able to harvest one year earlier. Tjømsøe Kloster December 6th, 1842. Hans Cappelen."
In 1843 the Winterflid departed from Skien with 143 passengers. She arrived at New York on July 27th. Master was Capt. O. Ellingers.
