Is the 1865 Census for Nannestad incomplete. Can't find jens Hansen (1823, wife Anne Ingelsdatter (1821) Living Children: Birthe Marie (1847), Hermann (1849), Johan Gustav (1854) Lars Christian (1856), Olavus (1859), Edvard (1862) & Harold (1864). Can't find them on 1875 other than Johanne is found in Ullensaker, Akershus. Also Johanne Jensdatter has a daughter born out of wedlock and named Lena (19 Nov 1877) in Vestre Aker, Oslo. Supposedly emigrated in 1881 to America. No trace of emigration but Lena is found in Kragness, Clay, Minnesota and marries John Dolan in Cuba, Becker, MN. Any help with Census, emigration for Johanne and daughter Lena or where abouts of Johanne in America welcome. Lena takes the name Melby and there is a Johanne Melby in Cuba, Becker, MN but she is married to Gulbrand Larsen and her name was Johanne Ericksdatter.

Did follow up on Johan Gustav and Else Marie Olsdatter. They came to Minnesota and ended up at the end of their life in Inverway, Mackenzie, Saskatchewan, Canada. I will follow up on these leads for Olaus in Sundby, Akershus and Gustav Jensen in Lybaek, Akershus, Lars Jensen in Knepper, Akershus and Hermand Jensen in Ullensaker. Maybe I can find more on them. I was not aware that I could access Bygdeboks thru Family Search.org. Will try to learn how to do that. The parish records for Nannestad are daunting. I can not seem to adapt to the style of writing. These other parishes may yield more information for me and clearer handwriting. Thank you so much. I was hoping that Johanne Jensdatter did marry someone from a Melby farm which would explain why her daughter Lena used that name on her marriage record. I will keep looking for a clue. Thanks for finding them and giving me hope.

Tree has Jens Hansen Bjerkeeiet b 1823, died 1883 at Rudseiet, Bjerke, Nannestad.
On Moløkken in 1900 is Lars Evensen Melby with two children born in Dakota, USA. I found no connection so far.
Cheryl, you have a marriage record for Lena? To help find out more about Lena and her mother Johanne, as you asked, the forum is much boosted if you share records and other evidence you already have. Thanks.

The marriage is recorded in the ELCA marriages database as occuring in Lake Park Lutheran on 29 Dec 1897. Lina's birthdate is recorded as 19 July 1879 born in Kristiania to parents Erik Krostophenson (most unusual rendering of the name) and Johanne Jensdatter.
There is a death record in the same church for Johanne Melby who was married to Gulbrand Melby. Her birthdate is given as 24 Aug 1828 (I'll check the year again) in Nannestad. She died 3 April 1912.
Pending my recheck of her birth year, the difference does create a question in my mind, how did you arrive at a birthdate of 1852 for your Johanne Jensdatter?

The Minnesota state census 1905 Lina age 27 states that she has lived in Minnesota for 24 years.
There is this 3 1/2 year old Lina Jens* leaving Nannestad in 1881 with Herman Jensen, heading to Lake Park, Minnesota:

I do not have an actual record of the marriage but the local Museum has a card file. Once I had that date, Ancestry brought up the marriage information. Do not confuse Johanne Ericksdatter with Johanne Jensdatter. I have researched Johanne Ericksdatter and she also had a child out of wedlock, Married Gulbrand Larsen in Norway and they together had a son. They are buried at Lake Park, Minnesota. They are in this family also but she was easier for me to track in the Digital Archives. If the 3 1/2 year old Lina left Norway with her Uncles and not her Mother, then the Mother may have died. I will try and check that. On the census information you found: "Again using the search engine on Ancestry.com" Are you able to instruct me as to how I find a search engine on Ancestry.com? I did not know this existed. Absolutely incredible how much great information you have found! More than I hoped for.

As Jackie found in the probate for Jens Hansen, who died 1883, he was survived by "wife Anne Ingelsdtr and 4 adult children." The forum hasn't accomplished all the research needed to know who were the 4, but posted are unverified hints that Birthe Marie, Hermann, and Johan Gustav survived past 1883. Herman was probably spotted in a 1900 census. The other hints are only hearsay; they are not substantiated in this thread.
Cheryl, a search engine is the unseen digital tool that allows us to do a digital search. We go to a website, choose the search option, and type in our search term. When we click "Search" we are activating the search engine. It chugs along the track, so to speak, taking us where we want to go (to the desired search results).
The reference to a search engine just meant, "When searching on Ancestry.com, the following results were obtained."

Well, it might be coincidental that Lina left at the same time as the Melbys, (perhaps on the same ship?) and ended up in the same place as the Melbys and that the Melbys donated their name to her but.....
Most public libraries in U.S. carry the library edition of Ancestry and so the databases of information should be available to you. If you input ancestry.com sometimes they will offer a 2 week free subscription. The ELCA databases are also available at archives.com another subscription site which offers a week's free subscription also.

I may have solved the mystery of where Lena Melby came from. If her Mother died in Norway and the unmarried Uncles brought her to America, she would have to live with someone. A Lena Melby (no birth record in Becker County/Lake Park) is listed for Edward Melby (1851-1912) Married Marie (1853-1937) in 1878, Emg. 1882, four years after their marriage in Norway. When Marie died she was survived by six children and a Lina Melby is listed. She was just a child so she would have taken their last name. This information came from a "Down Memory Lake" in a Lake Park Newspaper. Handwritten by a local women and donated to Museum. Unfortunately there is no other information on Lena but I might be able to make the connection as to how they are related to each other. I can't think one would just drop off a child to strangers. Your information is opening up several doors on this family. Can't Thank you enough.

Johanne Ericksdatter Melby was one of six children and Erick and Johanne were the only children to survive to adulthood. Johanne Ericksdatter had a daughter out of wedlock named Anna Marie Oldsdatter Melby (1845-1921) Born Nannestad on the Langerud-Hougan Farm. Confirmed in Nannestad. Gulbrand, Johanne and Anna Marie are all working as servents on the Hombledalen Farm in 1865. Gulbrand and Johanne mary 12 Oct 1866 in Nannestad. They emigrate on 19 May 1881 leaving from Kristiania. First record of them in Cuba, Becker, MN is 1900 Census. Gulbrand Larson (1830-1909) and Johanne had a son born (1867-1935) named Gustav Edvard.

Johanne Eriksdatter daughter Anna Marie married Olaus Jensen Dolen and they had a son named John Alfred Dolen who married "Lena Melby" I have a lot of information on the Dolens. It never occurred to me that Erik Christoffersen might be related other than to the birth of Lena. I might find that all this new information will clear up more things than I thought. I love that estate information. That is one thing I need to check into in the future. I do pretty well in the regular parish records but sure need to branch out more.

I am on Ancestry.com. My tree has over 4,000 people but I have been limited by what I can find on people because I haven't been adventurous enough to branch out. The Emigranter information was especially helpful because you gave me the answers so when I tried to duplicate these records it was easier to learn. Before I only had some chance of coming up with a record. I am also going to try and duplicate the Probate records now that I have the answers. I have relied heavily on the Digital Arkives parish records, 1865 Census and FamilySearch. Your help has actually opened up some other avenues. I have a feeling this Melby-Dolen relationship goes around and around. They are probably all related.

If this is accurate, and if this son Erik moves with his father or visits the family in Ullensaker, it puts this Erik Kristoffersen in the path of Johanne Jensdatter in Ullensaker census 1875. According to the tree, this Erik has a sister Lina.
A girl meeting the description of Johanne Jensdatter's child Lina b 1877 mysteriously emigrates (or seemingly travels with) this Erik's aunt, to Lake Park, Minnesota, in 1881.

Here is how to search the 1875 Norwegian Census on Ancestry.com
On the main Ancestry.com page click on SEARCH, on the drop down menu click on All Collections.
On that page, scroll down to Explore by Location and click on Europe. Click on Norway.
Under Data Collections, Look at the entry under Norway Census and Voter Lists. Clidk on Norway Select Census, 1875, (in Norwegian)
In the Search Box, click on Match all terms exactly, I used First Name, Anna and Last Name Ingel* as a way to limit the number of hits. Click on Search.
You get only one record, that for Anna Ingelsdatter. Click on View Record and you will see the Record I ;posted on Page One of this topic
Use the procedure for any of the other family members that you would like to find in the 1875 Norwegian Census.

The package of evidence shows a mother Johanne Jensdatter b 1852 Nannestad goes to Sundby, Ullensaker, gives birth to Lina 1877 out of wedlock, seemingly away from home. The child is taken to America (destination Lake Park township, Becker county, Minnesota) by her maternal uncle Herman Jensen. Perhaps her mother had died? The two seemingly traveled or may have with Gulbrand Larsen Melby and wife Johanne Eriksdatter (who is possibly, as speculation, Lina's paternal great aunt). Lina is raised by the Melbys in Cuba township, a neighboring township to Lake Park. In the time-honored tradition of Norwegian immigrants, the first US records use the patronymic name of the male head of household - Larson - for everyone in the small family. Later Gulbrand and Johanne use Melby and ditto their ward, Lina.
A local newspaper story about Lina's marriage, or Gulbrand's 1908 death, or Johanne's death, might bear this out.
But anyway, to my mind that's the story created by the research here.

Jane, I have now had time to catch up with all this information and I agree. He probably is the father of Lina. It does make sense. Lyndal40, Thanks for the instructions. I will try this method and also for finding the arrival of Herman Jensen and Lina Jensen into the United States. Jkmarler, Yes, you are right. That has to be her on the 1885 Census. What a great find. Until Jane pointed it out I did not realize the Gulbrand Larsen, Johanne Eriksdatter and Herman Jensen left the parish at the same time. How this started was Erik Kristoffersen and Anne Randine Kristoffersdatter had a son named Johan Laurits Kristoffersen (21 Sep 1872) and he married Annette Helmine Ristvedt at Lake Park, MN. The note on his coat had the name and address of his Aunt in Lake Park, Minnesota. He was 16 yrs and came by himself. I did not know how to find him but when I was doing the Dolen/Melby branch I realized that John C. Lund was Johan Laurits Kristoffersen. Had the exact same birthdate. You have no idea how thrilled I am with so much information! I would not have figured all this out on my own. This new stuff should keep me busy and quiet for awhile.

Here comes Anne Ingelsdatter b 1821 and her son Harald Jensen b 1864, registered in the parish leaving records 17 April 1883, going to America:

Anne's husband had recently died. Seems as if Harald returned home and brought his mother back to USA with him.
Their destination is Moorhead, Minnesota:

Here is Harald Jenson in 1905 says he's lived in Minnesota for 24 years. He appears to be living with or next door to an Olaus Jenson age 44 b. Norway and Olaus' family:

The Moorhead Daily News is included in the online holdings of newspaperarchives if you have access through a facility or via your own subscription. I used to have access and a lot of Lake Park people are covered in this paper. Dates covered appeared to be 1930s- 1950s or so.

I now live 12 miles from Lake Park, Minnesota. I live in Detroit Lakes which has the Becker County Courthouse and an awesome Museum. I am going to check with them the Museum and see how far back they have copies of the Lake Park Journal. They used to have them back to 1878. Now I think they have copies back to 1942. When they run out of room, they send things to the State Historical Museum. I am making notes of things to look for at the Museum. This Moorhead Daily News would definitely cover a wider area than Lake Park. I just recently was able to connect Johanne Eriksdatter to Johan Laurits Kristoffersen. Can you provide me with records for his emigration? He was born 21 Sep 1872 in Austadhaugen, Holter, Nannestad. Emigrated in 1888. I can not get him to appear and I could not find him leaving the parish. Would be interesting to know where he came into the United States. Most of these people are coming in by way of Philadelphia to Lake Park or Moorhead. It is sentimental but I was really happy to get those additional records with Harald Jensen going back to Norway to get his Mother and the extra Census records. I need to pull more 1885 census records. Why they don't come up is a mystery but you might be right; they used their patronymic name first and may have settled on a different last name later. You have solved the whole story and backed it up with paperwork. It does not get any better than that. I will contact that fellow from the Nannestad Family Forest.

To summarize info posted in the two threads:
Johan Laurits Kristoffersen was the brother of Erik Kristoffersen b 1857, the proposed possible father to Lina. If Erik is the father, then Johan Laurits would be Lina's paternal uncle.
Johan Laurits Kristoffersen was the nephew of Johanne Eriksdatter (wife of Gustav Larsen Melby); Johanne and Gustav seemingly raised Lina.
