| Hello again! I just learned that my great-great grandfather, Gust Sunde, emigrated here from Norway. I don't know much else, except that he first married my great-great grandmother, Marne Brenne? either here in Minnesota or in Norway. She died around 1898, when my great-grandmother was 2 or 3, in Herman, MN. Any information you can find on either of them? Thanks! Shari |

Some indication of year would be nice. If they were married in Norway they probably came from the same parish. Farm names Sunde and Brenne can be found in Alstadhaug, Skogn Nord-Trøndelag. Gust could be Gustav and Marne could be Maren They were both born approx 1862. |

Hi, I'm in the possession of farmhistory books from Skogn, and Gustav Sunde is mentioned there.
Gustav is born 04 July 1862. His parents was Haldor Andersen Sunde & Guruanna Bertilsdatter Stormo. Haldor conveyed the property Sunde Nedre on November 24th, 1855.
Haldor Andersen Sunde, b. 10 Nov 1811 - d. 24 Apr 1887, father Anders Lambrigtsen Sunde (1774-1816). Haldor married Guruanna Bertilsdatter By on 30 Oct 1851 Guruanna Bertilsdatter By, b. 28 Aug 1826 - d 29 May 1917, father Bertil Sørensen Sørmo
Haldor & Guruanna's children: 1. Baronline 27 Mar 1852, married Kristoffer Andreassen Brenne 2. Andrea 03 Aug 1854, married Hans Andreassen Hallan 3. Jonas 14 Dec 1856 - 22 Jan 1885 4. Anders 02 Oct 1859 - 24 Jul 1902. Next owner. 5. Gustav 04 Jul 1862 6. Bernhardt 15 Nov 1864 - 26 Jan 1887 7. Henriette 01 Sep 1867 8 Godtfred 17 Oct 1870
Here is a picture of Gustav's brother Anders Haldorsen Sunde:

Gustav's nieces (daughters of Anders H.S.):
 Borghild (1890-1975) & Helga (1888-1971) Sunde.
The Brenne farm is next to Sunde, but I'm not so sure if she is the one linked to above, because this Maren (daughter of Jonas Rasmussen Brenne & Oline Jensdatter Skei) is listed as dead in 1880, according to the same bygdebook.

Greetings again, many years later. I so appreciate the information you have shared with me so generously. I have continued to research the genealogy of Gust and Maren Sunde over the years and the ONLY source for a death of Maren is in the Skogn bydgebok mentioned above. However, there is a Maren Rebekka Brenne born in 1862, emigrating to Amerika from Trondheim, on 26 Aug 1889. That link is:
A Maren (Mary) Brenne married Gust Sunde less than a year later on 8 Mar 1890 in Minneapolis. Is there any way to verify the accuracy of that Skogn book entry of Maren's death? |

Maren Rebekka Brenne is #33
Well, the written sources only seem to yield a single Maren Rebekka born in Trøndelag in the 1860ies. I haven't been able to access Skogn bygdebook yet, but I would be very suprised if the woman at #33 was not Jonas Rasmussen's daughter. |

I agree. After looking periodically over 15 years, one would think more supporting sources would have appeared by now to confirm her death in 1880 if it actually occurred. |

Following up on Maren Rebbekka Jonasdatter Brenne and her purported death in 1880, here is a clipping of the relevant passage in Skogn bygdebook. (Page 100 of Skogn historie 12: Øvre Skogn (2007, ed. Ivar Berre))
The passage mentions probate proceedings in 1883 when her mother took over the farm after the death of her father. I found the proceedings, thinking they might throw some light on the case. They start at the bottom of page 302 and top of page 303 here, and if I read it correctly, the estate is divided on the next page with 50% to the widow and 10% to each of five children, including Maren Rebekka, with no hint of her being deceased. |

Levanger historielag (Levanger history society) is the closest thing I found to a publisher for the Skogn farm history books (bygdebøker). I sent them an email earlier today, asking for their opinion, and they reply that the book is clearly in error about the 1880 death.

| Oh this is satisfying news to hear. Thank you so very much for taking this extra step to confirm what I wondered about for a long time. After Maren came to Minnesota in 1889 and married Gust Sunde in Minneapolis on 8 March1890, they moved to rural western Minnesota and 5 years later, gave birth to my great-grandmother, Helga, whom I knew as Helen. In 1897, Maren gave birth to Johanna, but sadly died less than 2 months later and the baby girl died the following year. So, Maren's actual year of death was 1897, at age 35. She is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Minneapolis. Gust Sunde remarried (wife Ragna or Rea Wambsal) and had many more children together before he died in 1941. Still, his gravestone is shared with Maren and their daughter, Johanna. His second wife's gravestone, is nearby. I suspect that Gust and Maren knew each other well before they each emigrated to Minnesota and she was quite dear to him. Gust and Maren's daughter Helga/Helen Sunde Wright, was my paternal great-grandmother and died at the age of 96 in 1991. I was 20 then and very fortunate to get to know her. Again, thank you Tore and all before you at Norway Heritage Community in helping piece this part of my family's history together. Shari Howell |

Thank you for sharing the American part of their life histories. There are Geni-profiles for both Gustav and Maren. Both of them are connected to their Norwegian ancestors several generations up, but there is no information about their life in America. In particular, there was no connection between the two profiles., but then I took the liberty to marry them off, two days after their 136th anniversary...
Here they are: Maren Rebekka Gustav |
