| According to my family records my fourth great grandfather was Captain Mathiesen of the Bark Zephyr. I am looking for additional information about him and his family. |

That would be John Mathiesen, but to connect names of ship captains to personal biographical data in this period is not always straightforward. Do you also know the name of your third great grandfather or grandmother who was his child?
Specifically, I wonder if you recognize any names connected to the Geni profile of this possible candidate. |

| Thank you for your reply. I looked at the Geni Profile of John Mathieson and did not see any names that matched my family records. My third great grandfather, Mathias Hans, was the son of Captain Hans Mathias and Karen Knudsen. Mathias Hans was born in Porsgrund Norway in 1803. Mathias Hans married Inger Marie Larson in New York City on 30 November 1853. Inger Marie Larsen is listed as passenger on the Bark Zephyr arriving in New York on 7 June 1853. |

Captain J. Mathiesen sailed the bark Zephyr to America in 1853 and 1854. According to this thread, his full first name was John. Neither the initial J nor the full name John matches any of the names you list. What is the source that connects your family to the the captain on the bark Zephyr?
Is the wedding record from 1853 available online? |

I wonder if the pair Captain Hans Mathias and Karen Knudsen could be this couple in the Norwegian 1801 census: Hans Matthiæsøn Smith and wife Karen Knudsdatter, living in Gjerpen parish in the Skien/Porsgrund area. His occupation is given as skipper, i.e. ship's captain, and he had a son Mathias baptised in 1803: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000012446367
The mother is not mentioned in the record, which was not unusual at the time, and even if the father is just Hans Matthiæsøn in the transcribed version, you find "Smith" as well if you click on the link to the original record. (Serial no. 128.)
Hans Matthiæsøn Smith died already in 1807: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/267/pg00000001986982

| There is a Geni profile for Hans Matthiæsøn Smith, but not all his children are listed. |

Confirmation of Mathias Hansen Smith in 1819. No. 5
Shoemaker Mathias Hansen Smith moved from Gjerpen to Oslo in 1826: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/285/pi00000000146331
Then, Mathias Hansen Smith became a master shoemaker in 1830, according to a list published in an Oslo newspaper in January 1831.
Shoemaker Smith advertised regularly in an Olso newspaper in the 1840ies, but in april of 1847 he announced an auction at his home, and after that the advertisements stopped.
In 1849, one Mathias Hansen Smith with age just slightly off appears on a passenger list at this site: https://www.norwayheritage.com/udvandret.asp?type=passengerlist&ps=377 |
