The 1853 New York marriage record posted above carries the exact same date supplied by the thread starter. Does the record give a year of birth for the bride as well? Someting to confirm the 1825 estimate from the passenger list? A little more input than ca.1825 and "some place starting with Fryden" might be enough to find her in Norway.

Well I have about run out of places to search. but it does seem that half of the OP's Tree does fit well with these two ancestors.

Karen's profile above links upwards to further ancestors, while Hans' profile doesn't, and tracing his roots may prove to be harder; at least Finn C. Knudsen, who wrote a "bygdebook" for Gjerpen and Porsgrund in 1948, stated that "hans oprindelse kjendes ikke"; his origin is unknown. (Here is a scan of the relevant double page.)

But note that two sisters are mentioned. That could be useful...

This same info is also stated on this website with a version of the 1801 census for Gjerpen, expanded with info from other sources. See family 26. The abbreviation "s.a" means "sønn av"; son of.

Yes! This is my Mathias H Smith! The family assumed he took the name Smith when he arrived in the USA. He was a shoemaker and a Civil War veteran who passed away in the New York Soldiers and Sailors Home, Bath NY, in 1882. I obtained his marriage record from his pension file at the National Archives in Washington DC. His wife, Inger Marie or Maria, lists numerous maiden names (Frydenberg, Larsen, Neilson) in the vital records that I have obtained. I assume she is from Frydenberg, went by Larsen, and perhaps one of her parents was named Nielson.
I will need a little time to digest all the fantastic information that both of you have provided. The Ancestry tree noted by AntonH is my working tree. I made a mistake in counting the number of greats when I first posted on this forum - Mathias H Smith is my second great grandfather and Hans Mattiaeson Smith would be by third great grandfather.
Many many thanks!!

Frydenberg may be a "farm name" and there aren't so many farms of that name. Here is a list of Inger with residence of Frydenberg:

And here is a list of Lars with residence of Frydenberg:
