Seeking any and all information on Sami/Norwegian Nils Paul Xavier family (great-grandfather) , his wife Amanda and two sons, Karl (my grandfather) and Johan (great uncle) who emigrated in 1873.
I am working both personally and professionally on family history, especially from the Sami viewpoint. They came to USA in Sept of 1973. Nils Paul was godson to Paul Gaimard and Xavier Marmier who were leaders of Expedition Scientifique du Nord in 1838-39 (visit to Kautekeino).
I will later post some items that may help in gaining clues.
Thanks in advance to anyone corresponding. Anyone can send materials in English or French (fluent in both). I apologize for not knowing much Norwegian.

Takk! Merci! Thanks! John E. Xavier

Hello!

I found a confirmation for Nils Paul Xavier when he was 15 1/2 in the churchbook for Kautokeino, Finnmark. The date of the confirmation was 1 april 1855. His parents are listed as Johannes Olsen Tornesis and Marith Persdatter (kvænangen)

Johannes Olsen Tornesis is still alive in the 1865 census and living with another of his sons (brother of Nils Paul) Mikkel Johannesen Tornesis. Here is that page of census: http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste.aspx?ft=1865&knr=2011&kenr=001&bnr=0067&lnr=00

When I have a chance to visit the genealogy library I will check the early records of Kautokeino and see how many more children of Johannes Olsen Tornesis and Marith Persdatter. There could be many of them since Mikkel was born in 1818 and Nils Paul not until 1839. Perhaps Johannes was married twice.

another note of interest is the ocupation listed on the 1865 census for Nils Paul Xavier. He living in Lyngen, Troms, Norway as a "Skolelærer" which means School teacher.

Sincerely,
Tami Jenson

To Tami,

I forgot to mention that indeed Nils Paul Xavier's father was married twice. My records on that are stored across town, and not on disc. I will try to clarify for you.

Hello!
I have information on Nils Xavier. I am the caretaker of a 19th century Minnesota parsonage with the church at the end of my long driveway. Reverend Xavier served this church and was the preacher when this house was built. He and his family moved into the house on Christmas Eve 1878. We have some information here as well as a few photographs. If you are interested feel free to contact me.

Dear Mr. Fjeld,

Thanks for your reply. I haven't been out to Franklin for some time, but will in Aug or Sept. I'm building up quite a bit of information on NP Xavier and family, and so anything you have is appreciated.

By the way, any Hoimyr families are related at NP's sister Anna Johanson (Johnson) married a Hoimyr. Also any Norums or Norems, as Mrs. NP, Amanda, was a Norem/Norum)

My email is xavijohn@hotmail.com - please feel free to communicate directly.

John Xavier
