After a recent enquiry on the Mariners forum I was directed to the following article. http://www.norwayheritage.com/articles/templates/genealogy.asp?articleid=4&zoneid=2
At the end of this very helpful article a reference was made to a ship Activ ,owned by Johan Vauvert, departed Skien on Oct. 22nd 1854 for Melbourne, Australia. No other details were available.
I am particularly interested to see if there is a crew list for this voyage held in Norway.
Regards, Brian.

Hi,
the captain on «Activ» was Theodor Theiste, and the ship carried lumber from Norway down to Melbourne.
In addition, he advertised (probably in the local newspapers) that he could bring emigrants for a reasonable fee. But how the trip went is not known...

Thanks for that imfo. Just back from some further research and found the Activ (Actif on our records in Melbourne) arrived here on April 9-10 1855. On the 30-6-1855 she was still in Hobsons Bay, Port Phillip, Melbourne although there was a reference that she was departng for Guam on May 12th!!!!. She reported 1 passenger, deals/ and Ballast on arrival. Brian.

In 1865, the captain is back in Skien, Norway.
Here is captain Theodor K. Theiste and wife Anna Theiste, nee Schaaning.

He must have been about 22(!) when he captained the ship Activ in 1854...

Captain Theiste was indeed very young when he captained the Activ(f) to Melbourne in early 1855. The crewman I am seeking, Lars Ellingsen, was also young, 20-21. How can I access a crew list as the Activ left Skien?
Again thanks for the imformation to date, Brian.

Before I close this attempt to locate a crew list for this departure, can anyone imform me whether such a list is unlikely to exist in any records held in Norway?

It is not very likely that a crew list can be found as such. However, it could be possible to reconstruct one by researching the rolls of sailors (maritime inscription), as the name of the ships the sailors had signed up for would be noted there.

Thanks Borge. Excuse my ignorance but how can these documents be accessed? Brian F McLean.

As explained in the article I wrote, which you gave a reference to in your first post above, they are not easy accessed. It will probably be a time consuming research, and you probably have to visit the archives in Norway, as most of the records are not filmed.

Once again thanks for your patience. I was hoping by the wording you used in your reply and the methodology of reconstructing a sailors service that you thought may be possible could have opened a new avenue of enquiry for me.
Looks like it is either a trip to Norway or put it in the too hard basket.
