                      | I was hoping to not have to ask for help on this one but even after getting Olaf's death certificate and naturalization papers I still can't find his parentage or birth/baptism records. That's where I got stuck......maybe this one can't be solved? |

When you write "01/11/1870 or 71" are you meaning the American or the Norwegian reading of those possible dates? January 11 or November 1?
You checked birth records for Lillehammer and Fåberg? Did you also check those areas for the parish "Utflyttede" records of 1888? |

                      | I meant January 11th- thank-you. I checked Faberg but Lillehammer only had records available from the 1900's. I'll check the other parish you mention, thanks. |

The "Utflyttede" records are in the regular parish church books - they are the "leaving the parish" record of persons reporting that they are departing. Not a required listing but many, not all, people leaving were listed.
Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site - http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

Thank-you Hopkins. I didn't recognize the word but I had looked for the 1888 records in those parishes, unfortunately the records stop at 1878. Olaf also says in his naturalization papers that his last residence was Lillehammer so one would suppose that he lived there from birth until immigration at 18 so I thought he would be easy to find in the 1875 census- but not under the last name of Hagen. Maybe the C. is for Kristiansen or something like that. I'll keep trying, thanks for the assistance. |

The 1875 census for Fåberg shows several possible candidates - an Ole Christensen born ca.1872 living with family on a farm then called Smerudhagen, an Ole Karlsen born ca.1874 living with family on a farm then called Skjellerudhagen nedre, and an Ole Kristiansen born ca. 1871 living with family on a farm then called Skjellerudhagen øvre.
Your man may have shortened the name of the farm.
I think you should look for American church records where he may have married or been a member of the congregation and they might have some note of the names of his parents.
