                      | Hi, I am trying to find more information on Simen Andersen born 1859 at Eidanger Parish and Prgj to father Anders Simensen and mother: Gunhild Svenungsdatter. On the 1875 Census he is listed as a "Sailor" age 16. I have him arriving in Australia in 1881 on board the "Loch Naw" he is a mariner and is listed on a few vessels sailing around the Pacific. How do I find out when he became a sailor, are there registers of merchant sailors? The Loch Naw was a vessel that was domestic in Sydney Australia so while he claims that is the vessel he arrived in Australia on I'm not sure. He put this information on his Naturalisation papers. Hope someone can help. I have his marriage and death date and a picture of his grave if anyone else is reaching him. Many thanks Margaret Weston

                      | Eidanger is close to the city of Porsgrund, but as the family had relocated to Brunlanes, which is closer to Larvik, already by 1865, you should probably first look in the Larvik sailors' rolls. |

                      | Youth roll, patent no. 1257: One voyage to England in 1875 with the ship Ariadne and one to Hull in 1876 with the ship Laura. Transferred to the main roll in 1877 (??). The two next voyages seem to be with the next holder of the patent. |

                      | Main roll, Patent no. 2510: Only one voyage, with Jenny to Bremen (??) in 1877. Says Rømt London, i.e., escaped from the ship in London, Aug. 1 1877.
Such desertion was apparently common; it was technically illegal but rarely punished, according to one source. It was tempting, as wages could be higher on foreign ships.

All other voyages with this patent seem to be with the next holder.
