I am looking for information on a family from Suldal in Rogaland, who emigrated in 1864:
Ola Torsen Øverland, born ca. 1830 in Sauda, married 1859 to
Anna Toresdotter Rossemyr, tenant farm Stien, born 1837.
Two sons: Tore, b. 1860 and Tore, b. 1862.

According to naming traditions, their sons are named for their grandfathers, who had the same name, thus producing two sons with the same name.

The family lived at a tenant farm named Eskjedalen under Veka farm. Eskjedalen is spelled «Espedalen» in some sources, and Veka was often spelled «Vegge» or «Wegge» by the ministers who kept the official records.

As you can see, there are a lot of possible names that the family could have used in the USA: Torsen, Olsen (sons), Thorson, Olson, Wegge, Vegge, Veka, Eskjedalen, Espedalen, etc. And the sons could have used Thomas or Tom as a first name. In any case, I have not been able to find out what became of them in America.

Information on these people is available in bygdebøker for Sand and Suldal: Ernst Berge Drange, Sand. Garder og folk, vol. 1, p. 584, and Drange, Suldal, vol. 2A, p. 773.

Can anyone help me find these people?

It would help if we knew where in America they were going. Here is the record for them leaving in 1864. Numbers 1 to 4. Do you know of any relatives, family etc. that lived in America that they might have been going to?

I see the emigration record spells the boys as Thore.

In the Family Search copy of this record he is attached to a Family Tree but he is its only member?

Yes, Thore is a common spelling of Tore and is probably more common in church records, since the ministers were educated in Denmark and used to putting in silent h´s. I will let my husband, Olav Veka, follow up on these posts. He is helping Ernst Berge Drange track down emigrants that «disappear» in America for the subsequent volumes of the bygdebøker for Suldal. Olav will be much better at accessing whether the Tore Olson in your links is a good bet!

By the way, I am the same profile as nancyc, and I have been «on board» here for a good many years. I was unable to log into my old profile, so I gave up and created a new one. I e-mailed Børge Solem to ask whether the two profiles could be combined… We´ll see.
