Hi!

I have two questions.

1. There is a comment regarding an infant; Torbjørn Olsen. Son of Ole Torbjørnsen Omnes. Probably on board. Yes.
The family registration (original doc.) states one infant, yes? In addttion to one child. Can we assume that this reflect who actually borded the ship in Larvik.
Was it normal not to register name of infants?
If he died on the voyage, any way to find out?

2. Regarding payment. How - and when - was this actually done? A receipt is included in the documents. Both Speciedaler and Dollars are mentioned. Confusing to me.

Thanks,

PetterN

United States required filing of a passenger list at the 1st port of call in U.S. Sometimes deaths aboard are recorded on the passenger list filed.

If you are searching for a name for the infant, you may want to try the Utflyttede records from Hjartdal or possibly from Larvik, or the baptismal records from Hjartdal and Larvik parishes.

It would seem that payment for the voyage was made in advance. Sometimes, a "local" person is involved in organizing people to go on a voyage and they were responsible for the collection of the payment.

But there are others here who are more familiar with procedures than I.

He is not in Utflyttede from Hjardal og Heddal. Father, mother and older sister in Hjartdal church book.

Since the voyage is prior to 1850 have you looked for the family in the Gerhard Naeseth series The Norwegian Immigrants to the United States: A Biographical Directory 1825-1850 for information about the family?

Personally, I have run into a family who reported a death at their local church which they hadn't memorialized from 6 years before. What do you know about the family in US?

According to Naeseth, the persons in question were Ole Torbjørnsen Omnæs (age 28), Thone Gregersdatter Hougen (age 30), Thorbjørn Olsen (born in Heddal on February 28, 1847), and Gunhild Olsdatter (born in Hjartdal on October 5, 1842). They also had a child born in Sept. 1849 named Carl Joseph. (And several other children after arriving in America)

The transcribed list here at Norway Heritage was found in the Fritzøe Verk archives at the State Archives in Kongsberg. I do not know whether it is identical to the one filed in New York upon arrival, as it may have been created for a different purpose and filed in Norway prior to departure. The New York list may therefore look different. However, the New York lists are sometimes very detailed, including names and ages, while other lists are more cursory. The purpose of these lists was for customs officials in New York to calculate the head tax; in practice, they were not always concerned with names, but rather with the total number of passengers.

Here is a tree from Geneanet. Neither of the two children born in Norway are mentioned.

Thank you for all replies! (above). I am mostly curious about the fate of Torbjørn Olsen Omnes (b. 1847). Gunild b. in 1845 (not 1842). She became 'Corneila' over there? Note - this is not my "family", however I have been in contact with a descendant of Ole Torbjørnsen Omnes, b. 1820.
