An interesting book on the history of house plants in Norway has just been published, called «I alle vinduer» (In Every Window). There is an article about it here, including many illustrations. I have not found an English version of it on sciencenorway.no, but it may turn up soon.

House plants were common in Norwegian windows from the mid-1700s. They were used for decoration, but it was also common to cultivate cuttings of flowers, and people exchanged plants with each other.

It would be interesting to know whether cultivating house plants was something Norwegian immigrants took with them. Has anyone heard stories about bringing this custom to America and how house plants were used?
