Borge, this question might be one that you are best to answer.

Skanna materiale: Bergen politikammer / politidistrikt, AV/SAB-A-60401/L/La/Lab/L0006: Passprotokoll, 1857-1879, s. 91 - Skanna arkiver - Nasjonalarkivet nummer 4 ovenfra

Vennlig hilsen Wenche

I'm opining that it's unlikely in 1863 that he went direct to an American port during war time. Much safer to land in Canada and go across the land border (including the Great Lakes) to America. If he did land in an American port, the passenger list was required to be deposited in the first American port of call.

The entry in the passport register tells us nothing beyond the date the passport was issued and the intended destination. It is therefore impossible to determine which ship he left Norway aboard. However, as mentioned above, if he arrived at a U.S. port, it may be possible to identify the ship on which he arrived. Finding that information, though, could be rather like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Looking at the data that the link I provided indicates that all ships leaving Bergen in the year of 1863 travelled to Quebec. I do not know of any online data that is available for arrivals into Canada in 1863. Also the date on the Passport Register is October 20. It would appear form the link I posted on Digitalarkivet User Forum that all the ships from Bergen left much earlier in the yer than October. Would he have then actually left in 1884?
