The Ægir was built at Sundet wharf at Risør in 1850. The Ægir left Østerrisør (Risør) in the morning of July 6. She was mastered by Capt. Chr. Schach, heading for New York with 140 emigrants of which most were from Tørrisdal and Nissedal. There were also some from Tvedestrand and Larvik. Most of the Telemark emigrants had relatives in the new world and their destination was Wisconsin. Only one from Larvik had decided to go to find his luck in California. After leaving New York the Ægir sailed to Marseilles, France.
