In 1875 the ship was rebuilt in Scotland, under the supervision of the instructors of the English Lloyd and French Veritas. She was then converted from a paddle steamer to a single screw steamer and renamed Labrador. Her engines came from the workshops of Messrs. Maudsbay, of London. They were of the compound pattern, with four cylinders and of a nominal horsepower of about 1.000. There was accommodation for 160 first class, 125 second class 653 third class, and 450 fourth class passengers. When described in the New York Times after the rebuilding, her length was given as 420 feet and the width 48 feet (some other sources gives her new lenght as 394.9ft). She also had a third mast added. The saloon was under the spare deck, and occupied the entire width of the vessel. It was described as magnificently fitted up and well ventilated. In 1878 she was described with refridgerating chambers installed which allowed her to take cargo of meat for export across the Atlantic.
