My mothers paternal family are Leths from Arendal Aust-Agder Norway. My GG Grandfather George Emily Leth (Known as Georges Emil Leth) reportedly arrived in Port Adelaide Australia about 1871and jumped ship at the age of 16 before running away to the NSW goldfields and settling in Sydney in the late 1800s. The ship was a norwegian merchant ship supposedly captained by his father.

His death certificate aged app 90 y.o. in 1945 states his fathers name as Samuel Nicholas Leth and his mother as Marion Georgina Leth.

I have uncovered evidence of a marriage on 25 FEB 1851 at Arendal, Aust-Agder, Norway between Samual Nicolai Leth and Maren Gurine Jensdr. This has to be Samuel and Marion.
As yet I haven't uncovered any trace f their families in Norway and there's no evidence of them coming to Australia.

My mother had a family tree showing Georges father as a Hans Leth Ships Captain, brother to Frederik custom officer and Neils ship broker of riga as well as sisters Maren Cecilie spinster and Catharine Helmer (Kitty) who married Consul Marten or Morten Kallevig.

Their father was Isaac Leth from Arendal and husband to Marthe Sophie Willumsen Daughter of Niels Willumsen shipowner and proprietor of Hogedal, Arendal

I am stuck with Samuel, father of young George the runaway. Is he really Hans leth the ships captain or is this family history incorrect as there is evidence of a Samuel Leth marrying in ARENDAL IN 1851. Is there another Leth family sea captain from Arendal ??

Was samuel a 4th son in the family Leth of Arendal and what ship did he captain to Port Adelaide more than once during the period 1850 - 1880. If i can discover the true identity of Georges father I can then confirm my mothers research or take a different direction.

If anyone can help please post a reply.

Hi,
George's mother Maren Leth is a widow in the 1865-census, so her husband Samuel must have died between 1856-1866.

Their original wedding record from 25 FEB 1851 shows that Marens father is Jens Ellingsen.

Maren Gurine Jensdr
Birth: 19 JUN 1823
Christening: 22 JUN 1823, Østre Moland, Aust-Agder
Parents: Jens Ellingsen & Anne Marie Kjoltolsdr

From the same 1851 wedding record, it looks like Samuel's father is listed as Hans Helmer Leth from Birkeland.

Maybe this Henriette Hansdr is a sister of Samuel? In that case, Samuel's parents should be Hans Leth & Gjertrud Stiansdr from Birkenes, Aust-Agder.

Hans Helmer Laeth (37) & Giertrue Stiansdr (25)
Marriage: 18 Feb 1823 Place: Tveit, Vest-Agder

Jens Martin, chr 05 DEC 1852, Tromøy, Aust-Agder
Parents: Samuel Nikolai Hansen Loth Vasmekrogen Stromsboe & Maren Gurine Jensdr

Georg Emil, chr 03 DEC 1854, Tromøy, Aust-Agder
Parents: Samuel Nikolai Leth Varmekrogen & Maren Gurine Jensdr

Juliane Marie, chr 05 APR 1856, Arendal, Aust-Agder
Parents: Samuel Leth & Maren Ellingsen

Confirmation in Birkenes in Tveit, 1838, page 117, #8:
Samuel Nicolay Leth (15), born Birkeland
Parents: Hans Hemler Leth & Gjertrud Stiansdr

Samuel Nicholas did marry Maren Gurine Jensdatter Febr 25 in 1851. Samuel was then 27 years and a "skipstømmermann" - shipscarpenter and his father was Hans Leth, see #6 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=773&idx_id=773&uid=ny&idx_side=-196 Samuel was born at Strømsboe in Birkeland but lived at Ormevigen.
Maren Gurine was the daughter of Jens Ellingsen Ormevigen and was also 27 years old.
Jan Peter - I worked too slow - started actually before you, but did not post it at once.

Look up the 1801 census for Aust-Agder, Arendal and search for given name "starts with" Isa - the family is there. Isaachs occupation is Weiging and measuring.
They have 7 servants.

I am so grateful for the information you have sent me. My Great Grandfather Jorg (George) always told his family he was raised by his father, a ships captain and all records have pointed to Hans. George even acknowledged this as correct when shown a copy of the family tree prior to his death in the 1940s in Sydney. Until now the only mention of Samuel, Jorgs real father, was on the death cert in Australia but that was never sited until I recently requested a copy. (Obviously someone in Australia knew of Samuels existence at the time for it to be recorded.)

The knowledge is new to all still living in Australia and the discovery of Samuels siblings and a continued family line is exciting. It appears now that Jorges was in fact raised by his Grandfather Hans and it would have been Hans' ship Jorg escaped from to try his hand in the Australian Goldfields as a 16 year old. The rest is on record in Australia. Isaac is in fact my GGGG Grandfather on my mothers side and Samuel Nicolay Leth who apparently died very young is no longer the missing link. I would be very interested to disscover the circumstances surrounding Samuels death. ....... Thank You for your assistance

Hello! This morning I may have discovered previously unknown family. I am the Grand daughter of Georg Emil Leth born Arendal Norway in 1854 died Sydney Australia 4.5.1944 aged 90. My Grandmother was Ellen Louise Leth nee Nu (Knee) married St.Stephens Church Newtown. My Father William Henry Charles Leth. Brother of Robert, Ethel, George, Marian, Ellen, Julia and May.
Being the youngest grandchild, I am excited at possibly discovering family history and family I had no prior knowledge of. I remember , as a child, many family gatherings at my grandfather's home.
P.S. I have a copy of a photograph of Kitty Leth

Hello MVJF

Thanks for this news. Henry John Charles Leth was my Grandfather but as I was born in 1950 I never met him or George. Henry died before his father.

My mother Julia May Helen Campbell (nee Leth) is the eldest daughter of Henry and Marjorie Lillian Fletcher. My Mother (b 30/12/1923) and my father (Donald Cameron Campbell born 9/5/1920) heve just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

I have a photo of George (Jorg) Emil Leth. If you remember the family gatherings you may remember my Mother Julia and her brothers Allan and Ron (both recently deceased).

You may be able to help with a query I have. The birth records in NSW show William as the older brother born 1895 and Henry 1898 but my mother swears her "Uncle Billie" was the younger born 1900, and that he lied about his age to join the army in about 1914.

Can you please clear this up for me as the records may need to be amended if this is true.

To MVJF again
Some information about your aunts and uncles: There's some doubt in the records about who was the father of who as George Leth and Ellen Schafter (Schaufler) only married in 1897. Ellen married alfred Schauffler a shearer from the UK in Newcastle NSW in 1883

The Childrens correct names are 1. Robert (I have no more information on him) 2. Ethel Maude B25.3.1884 (married John Smith as both Ethel Leth and Ethel Schauffler) 3. George M. L. Leth B1886 (aka Schauffler but who I think died during the war years quite young) 4. Marian (Birdy) Elizabeth Georgina B28.2.1889(named after Georges mother Maren Gurine Jensdatter and anglicised to Marion Georgina) 5. Ellen Louisa B30.3.1891, 6. Julia Ann Alice B22.6.1892, your father 7. William Charles Henry (my mum calls him Billy), B15.6.1895 ??? My Mothers father 8. Henry John Charles B28.4.1898 (after George and Ellen Married) and 9. Elizabeth (May) Mary B16.11.1902.

I only recently began this research after finding some old records of my mothers. I would love to talk about the family and uncover any new information that is available. I have some brief records going back to Ole Leth B about 1690. My private email address is <unclepete50@gmail.com>

Thanks
