I'm looking for the parents of Margrethe Lund b. 1868 who was married to Edward John Hanson b. 1855. His parents were Hans Larson b 1824 and Hendrica Sjonn b. 1828. Margrethe and Edward immigrated to America in 1891. I know they had at least two children in Norway, Hartvig Hanson 1882, Alma D Hanson 1884. Thanks for reading this.

This looks to be Edvard Hansen in Tune, Østfold, census-1865.

You gave Margrethe's birth year as 1868. I think it should be 1858 if Hartvig was born in 1882.

Thank you...you are very good at finding these things. Just found out she was his second wife, younger than him. Some children must not be hers...I assume.

They had a total of 13 children when all was said and done. Laura was my grandmother. So far I have not been able to get past her mother Margrethe or Maggie as she was called. All I found was on my grandmothers death record was listed mothers maiden name "Lund". I just checked another childs death records and it lists mothers maiden name as "Olson". It's not getting sny easier.

I probably shouldn't show this record, but there are too many similarites for a Anne Margrethe Olsdtr age 59, from the Lund farm in Østfold.

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=2&filnamn=f60134&gardpostnr=526&sokefelt=skjul

Margrethe could be the daughter of Ols and Ane. I'll be looking.

Yes, that is the death record. I had she died in 1941 and Marshall county would be correct. I never thought of that but that might explain the both names of Lund and Olsen!

One Margrethe Lund and her son to Chicago in 1891
(she would have been born in 1863)
The 1865 census for Tune show Edvards parents, his father Hans Larsen (who became a carpenter) was born Aug 27 1825, see bottom of page here
His father was Lars Larsen (he was a carpenter) and the mother was Ingeborg Hansdatter (she was called Inger and was Føderaadskone - women getting pension - she was also divorced from Lars Larsen).
Edvards mother was born June 6 1825, see #59
she was baptized Henrikka and the parents were Hans Thostensen and Helene Nikolaysdatter. In the 1801 census she was 15 years old and her parents were Nicolay Nicolaysen and Maria Christophersdatter. See
here
In the 1801 census Hans Thostensen was 7 years old and his parents were Tosten Ingebrechtsen and Anne Knudsdatter. See
here

Einar,

Following up on Margrethe Lund and Son John emigration. They sailed on the S/S Umbria from Liverpool to New York, arriving 7 Dec. 1891. Her citiizenship is cited as Norway. The age of John is an unreadable number for months.

Copied the following data:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Margt Lund
Arrival Date: 7 Dec 1891
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1863
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland
Destination: Illinois
Place of Origin: Liverpool, England;Norway
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian
Ship Name: Umbria
Port of Arrival: New York
Line: 13
Microfilm Serial: M237
Microfilm Roll: M237_580
List Number: 1871
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States

It the birth age of1863 for Margrethe is correct, she should have been in the the 1865 census, some place.

What a wealth of information! One part confuses me that I am trying to figure out. Of the 13 children, there is not one named John born about 1891 that she was with in Chicago in 1891. but we may not know where he is. So this is saying that maybe she married Edward in the states and that they did not come to America together as I had thought? Edward came alone with two children is that correct? That might be so since there is a big gap in the children between 1884 and1893. I did find where his first wifes name may be Dorothea. You people are good. Do you have a degree in research? Thank you so much for all the work.

Even though Margrethe Lund had citizenship Norway, maybe she just had been back in Norway to bear the son - in the emigration record it says her home is in "Amerika" - have not seen her in the 1865 census.

The 1900 Census kinda eliminates the above immigration possibility for Magrethe. They have been married 20 years (1880), which would apply to Edward since he immigrated with two children in 1889.

1900 United States Federal Census (Not a Link!)
Name: Ednat Hanson
Home in 1900: Marsh Grove, Marshall, Minnesota
Age: 44
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856
Birthplace: Norway
Relationship to head-of-house: Head
Spouse's Name: Mayrete
Race: White
Immigration Year: 1889(Edward)
1891(Magrethe)
Household Members: Name Age
Ednat Hanson 44 (Aug 1855)
Mayrete Hanson 32 (June 1867)
Hartney Hanson 18 (June 1881) or Jan.
Alma Hanson 16 (June 1884) or Jan
Olga Hanson 6 (Sep 1893)
Laura Hanson 4 (Aug 1885)
Lydia Hanson 3 (Mar 1897)
Mara Hanson 1 (Aug 1898)
Jalmar Hanson 0.12 (May 0/12)

Magrethe's birth year of 1867 could be a mistake, since the census was enumerated 19 June 1900.

I'll notify Ancestry.com to correct their names.

Jedi, do you have theeir 1930 census? This one was kind of hard to find.

Les

I found them in the 1920 and 1930 census, but Ancestry.com has problems right now. and won't let me bring up the census pages.

Hans N Hanson (youngest son)
Home in 1930 census: Viking, Marshall, Minnesota
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1911
Relation to Head of House: Son
Father's Name: Edvart J
Mother's Name: Maggie
Household Members: Name Age
Edvart J Hanson 74
Maggie Hanson 62
Ethel V Hanson 21
Hans N Hanson 19

The census has very bad spelling on so many. I cannot see how they have been married 20 years. Maybe another mistake. His first two children were born in 1882 and 1884 I believe with his first wife. There is a nine year gap and then many more children. I believe they were married in that time period.

Age of first mariage him 26 her 19. Their age difference is 12 years in most census.
