| My grandfather, Emil Jacobsen was born in Lillestrom, Norway, Feb lst, 1885 (possible spellings of last name are Jakobs, Jakobsen or Jakobson). He left from Oslo in August of 1906 to come to the United States (Minnesota) on the ship Montebello. I am not sure , but think this was a ship taking passengers to Hull, England, by train to Liverpool and then on another ship to the US. I have tried to track his voyage through Ellis Island records with no luck. He eventually went back to Norway in 1910 and came back to the US in 1913 with his wife, Dagny. I have the record from Ellis Island for that trip but don't have the information I need on his 1906 trip. Can you help me? |

Emil and Dagny Eugine left Oslo in April 1913 on the Eskimo, see here.
It looks like he also had been on a visit in1909.

Here is what is available for Emil Jacobsen for 1906 on Ancestry.com. For this one the birth date is good but the arrival date is too early if he left Oslo in August. His destination is listed as Winnipeg. Occupation is carpenter.

A better listing based on the August date. Destination is Shibbo? Minnesota. Ticket paid for by friend Hjalmar Karlsson.
Last residence is listed as Lillesfrom ? Could be Llillestrøm.

This may be him on his 1909 trip. Father is listed as Jacob Jacobson. of Lillestrøm. Age is a little off. But on this same passenger list next to Emil are the two Halvorsens, Karl and Ole.

Hjalmar Karlsen is most likely the one who left for Minnesota in 1903, see here..

Thank you for all the information. By what you found, it looks like he came to US in 1906, 1909 and finally in 1913. I printed the church record of Emil and Dagny;s marriage but can't read the date. Were you able to read it? I'm very interested in the marriage date. Also since he made three trips to US, would you be able to find his return trips to Norway. It would be helpful to have a timeline as to how long he stayed in the US on the 1906 and 1909 trips.

Dagny Eugenis baptismal record is #50 - her parents were Halvor Kristiansen and Oline Larsen who were married in S Odalen May 25 1874, see last record.
Halvor was born 1848 and his father was Christian Sørensen. Oline (=Olea) was born 1853 and her father was Lars Torsen.
Oline, her mother and siblings in 1865.
Halvor in 1865.

Add. information.
In 1906 and 1909 Emil Jacobsens occ. was "Sagarbeider" Sawmill worker but when he married and left Norway 1913 his occ, was "Maskin snekker" Machine Carpenter. (Windows, doors, furniture etc.?) Perhaps he changed occ. in USA.
On Lillestrøm ca1900 there were at least ca 13 sawmills, all driven by Steam power.
Lillestrøm was that time called "Flisebyen" (Saw)dust city.
Lillestrøm - Little stream in the river Nitelva.

Thank you for all the help you are giving me. Since my
grandfather, Emil Jacobsen, came to the US in both 1906 and 1909 I am interested in when he returned to Norway from those trips to the US. Also I am interested in his brothers and sisters.
Do you have access to death records for Emil and Dagny's parents? |

On 12/14 a message was posted indicating my grandfather, Emil Jacoben, came over in 1909 but not through Ellis Island, but to Boston, Massachusetts. Is there a web site you could give me for ships coming through Boston, MA.
