After some time, I have a bit more information about my grandfather. Firstly, it is almost a certainty that he was of Russian ethnicity, but born in Riga. He died when Dad was 6 (he is now 95!) Only a couple of months ago, for the first time, Dad sang to us "God Save the Tsar" which his Dad taught him before he died! So Russian, rather than Latvian ethnicity. No self-respecting Latvian at that time would be teaching their child such a song!

Secondly, we traced through the wonderful archive network on ships crews and found the first British ship he sailed in -- the Hilltarn - was at the beginning of 1903. In the column for previous ship he wrote "Norwegian". So this is a clue as to when he left Norway. And his given age in 1903 was 27, ten years older than the age he was giving for his naturalisation in 1919. (??? He's led us a merry dance.) Anyway if this is his true age it means that he was born around 1876.

Thirdly, our dad also told us that his godfather was a great friend of my grandfather - a Norwegian by the name of Hjalmar Flinck. In 1915 he was 54, and was born in Larvig. He was a shipmate of my grandfather's, and possibly a link to my grandfather living in Norway. On all his ship's records up to 1916, my grandfather gives his place of origin as Christiania, so we are of the opinion that he lived there for some time, and that's where, for some reason, he decided to change his name from Kushkin (however it is spelt, it is Russian, rather than Latvian).

On the matter of name change, in the earliest records he is Daniel Switensen, and there is no suggestion of William. That came later.
Yes, he's led us a merry dance.

When it became clear a second war was looming, the British Government embarked on a "census" in early 1939, in essence to figure out where able bodied men were living and their occupations.

So, in 1939 K?Jalmar H Finck (dob 26 September 1859) and his wife Margaret (dob 3 Sept 1889) were living at 3 East Terrace Cardiff. It must be all of a mile from there to the old Cardiff Docks - just the sort of area a retired seaman might live. (As did my Norwegian great-grandfather)

Hjalmar died in Cardiff in Q1 1942 aged 82. Margaret died about 6 years later in Q3 1948, also in Cardiff, aged just 58. She was 30 years younger than Hjalmar - he was almost 60 when they married in 1917. So its unlikely they had any children who just might have had descendants with knowledge of his friendship with Sweetensen - at least there don't appear to be any records of such children.

Hjalmar's dob coincides exactly with that found by Lyndal - must surely be one and the same person.

He doesn't come up in a search of the 1911 UK census, so presumably came to UK after that.

Able Seaman H H Flinck is listed as a crew member on the Eustace (Official Number 135889) in 1915. Aged 54, place of birth Larvik, previous ship Star of Ireland out of Belfast. (See National Maritime Museum record BT400/3981/3) Can't find Sweetenson on the same search, but might be worth getting the crew list agreement in case his name was mistranscribed)

Hjalmar Hedvald Flinck resident in Cardiff was granted naturalisation under certificate A 13158 issued 22 March 1926.(National Archives record HO144/5686)

Just hope one of these records of Flinck might yield another clue on Sweetensen.

Here is the beginning of the s surnames in the index to Oslo sailor registrations. This index covers 1866-1930. I searched for both Kuskin and Sweetensen but found no entries for anyone with those surnames. However you may want to search yourself:

Hi, I have come full circle. For the last 4 years I have been trying to trace the Kushkin family in Latvia and Russia. The new suspect for William Sweetensen is Wassily Kushkin, born 1876 in Riga. A Wassily Kushkin was in trouble with the law in 1898 in Riga. I'm trying to establish if it's the same person as the one born in 1876. It would make a bit of sense that he left Riga on a ship and landed in Christiana to escape the law. Perhaps the 1900 census for Russians born 1870-1889 will come up with something? A huge long-shot, but just maybe....
