Simon Erlandsen, ships carpenter, immigrated in 1853 to Chicago with
wife Bertha (April 1822 - 1902) and children John (c1850 - ?) and Lena (c1852 - ?).
I do not find them in passenger lists. I do not know where in Norway they were from.
My research seems to be at a dead end.
After Simon's death between 1876 and 1880 the family used the surname Simonson.
Two more children, Theo and Severin Barton, were born in Chicago,
but both died of tuberculosis with only one surviving child,
Barton's daughter, my grandmother Ruth Simonson Robertson (1882-1971).
Lena Simonson was single in 1870 and was the widow Lena Evans in 1880.
Nothing more of John and Lena is known. Simon's wife Bertha had a sister
who probably immigrated with them; this sister may have been Helena Smith (? - 1894),
widow of Arthur Theodore Smith, who lived in Evanston across the street
from Barton's parents-in-law. |

Here is a candidate for Simon Erlandsen born abt 1823 in Stavanger, Rogaland. The problem is that he married a woman named Sussanne Marie Nielsdatter in 1842.

The Simon who moved from Øyer to Stavanger is definitely the same who married Susanne in 1842. Here (second entry) is the churchbook entry, in which the groom's place of birth is given as Øjers something.
This should weigh up for the discrepancy between father Erland Hov at baptism and father Erland Haulesveen at marriage.
There is something written in the last column, for previous marriages. Should I put it out on a special forum for interpretation of handwriting, or will someone here have a go first? |

I think the word is an abbreviation for prestegjeld.
He is listed as ungkarl and she is listed as pige, so there are no prior marriages for this couple. |

Using the above information I found a Tree on Ancestry. This Tree has no source but shows that Sussanne Nielsdatter died in Stavanger in 1854.
The Tree seems a little iffy, certainly need to find some sources. |
