Information from letters requesting the Civil War Pension for Halvor's wife found on Fold.3 indicate that Halvor left the family in the spring of 1859

Unfortunately that information fails to be copied and pasted here. The 1860 census indicates Halvor is still in Illinois. I would suggest that he left soon after that

And before 1865

Halvor's wife is referred to as "Miranda" in this letter and it suggests that her husband may have died in California.
Family folklore is that he didn't die but returned to his wife after being gone out west for 20 years. He was not well received by her and returned to the mines. ....thought to have been Montana.
