| P. C. Brevig | Foldereid, Namdalen | Renville Co., Minnesota | He came to Hawk Creek, Renville Co., MN., from Olmstead County by ox-driven wagons, and was among the first settlers in the area. He later ran a Bank in Sacred Heart. From the voyage to America he told that when arriving in Quebec, they were loaded into freight cars with planks to sit on and a water barrel (standing in the middle of the floor) to drink from. The barrel slid during travel so most of the water went a way it was not supposed to. After three days travel in that manner, they reached Sarnia (near Toronto), from where they went by steamboat. When they could not see land any longer, a fire broke out in a pile of wood in the engine room and the fire spread at a frightful pace. Panic arose in the poor emigrants. Luckily, through united effort, they mastered the flames - the lamenting cries stopped since they were saved. | |
