The Albania (1) was originally built for the Wilson Line of Hull as the Consuelo. The ship had twin screws and triple-expansion engines with 2 sets of 3 cylinders. Her service speed was 12 knots.
In April 1910, she suffered a fire in her coal bunkers while off Beachy Head in the English Channel. Over 700 passengers were temporarily transferred to the Furness Withy cargo steamer Kanawha. The fire was extinguished, and she returned to London, sailing again on 16 April for Quebec and Montreal.
In 1911, she was sold to the Cunard Line and renamed Albania.
