The Norddeutscher Lloyd steamship was built in 1907 at Danzig by F. Schichau. The Derfflinger was built to transport passengers on the transatlantic routes between Europe and America. She had a capacity of 104 passengers in first class, 104 in second class, and 1,919 in third class. During World War I the Derfflinger was requisitioned by British authorities and converted into a troop transport ship, known as HMT Derfflinger. After the war, the ship returned to NDL. In 1928.
