The Coburg was a passenger and cargo ship built in 1909 for the Norddeutscher Lloyd. The Coburg was designed for the transatlantic service, particularly the route between Bremen and La Plata, South America. She departed on her maiden voyage to La Plata on Jan. 15th 1910. She had a passenger capacity to accommodate 1,650 passengers on lower decks, with 50 second-class cabins. Powered by a steam engine producing 3,250 horsepower, Coburg could reach speeds of up to 12 knots.

The ship was in South America during WWI and was seized by the Brazilian Navy in 1917 as part of a broader effort to capture foreign ships. It was later handed over to the Brazilian shipping company Lloyd Brasileiro, where it was renamed Santarém and, eventually, Poconé. Under its new ownership, Coburg continued to operate for several decades.
