Brig Vesta, Simen og Ole Cock

The Vesta was built in 1851 at Arendal, Norway. Her tonnage was 385 gross and 355 net, and dimensions were: length 108,7 feet, beam 29 feet and depth 16,5 feet. In 1856 she was owned by Chr. Cock in Langesund. Mastered in 1851 and 1853 by Simon Cock, 1856 by A. Pedersen, 1862 - 65 by Simon Cock, 65 - 74 O. O. Cock, 1874 - 75 S. Cock. The Vesta first sailed with emigrants from Norway was in 1851, when she sailed out f Langesund and arrived at New York on September 2nd, carrying 155 passengers.

Newspaper announcement from 1850; Announcement. Passenger accommodation to New York. The brand new copper hooded brig "Vesta", burden 150 Commercial lasts, mastered by Capt. S. O. Cock of Langesund, will depart with passengers for New York in July, if a sufficient number of passengers signs on. The ship is good and solidly constructed, and comfortable equipped for passenger accommodation, with a spacey and 6 feet high between deck. As the ship by its construction will be an excellent sailor, she is most recommendable for passengers, and the master Capt. Cock, previous master of the brig Washington, will due to his skillfulness and close knowledge to the conditions in America, be a good guide and assistant for the passengers. Conditions can be negotiated with the undersigned, the Captain and his fellow broker Mr. Ole Cock at Sundbye. Passengers will also be embarked from the Skienfjord, but if a sufficient number of passengers sign on within the given time limit, notice will be given to those who have signed on.
