Hi all

First time on here, I'm trying to find any information on my Great Grandfather Ollie Johansen.

Here's what I have so far...

Ole William Johansen, born in Fredrikstad, Norway to a sea captain John Johansen (wife Emma Johansen, maiden name Andersen), followed a maritime career, worked out of U.S. Pacific ports, and arrived in New Zealand as a seaman between ~1917–1920, where he most likely jumped ship and settled, possibly in Napier before marrying Ruby Simmonds in Wellington in 1921.

I thought I might find the name of his ship. Any information greatly appreciated.

I have problems finding these people in Norwegian sources. Do you know when his parents were born? Does the Ancestry tree say?

What I do find, are newspaper pieces about a ferry that transported people along a 25km stretch of the river Glomma near its outlet in Fredrikstad. The captain's name was Johan Johansen. He bought the ferry in 1929 when he had already operated it for several years. In 1943 his son John took over, and kept on until 1946, when it was outcompeted by other means of transportation. According to the newspaper, Johan Johansen was 80 years old in 1946, i.e., born around 1866. So far so good, but this is probably him in 1900, without any Emma or Ole.

For what it is worth, the ferry was named Krabben. I found this photo in the book Taubåtfart på Glomma by Knut W Engebretsen. Krabben to the left.

Yes, he the supposed father married Borghild Ellen in 1891. But did he father a child Ole in 1892 somewhere in the area with another woman? I have not found a candidate in either Fredriksstad or Horten but I suppose there is also Kristienia, The only person I found born 22 Jan 1892 is Olaf Marinus.
