You are welcome.

I think Roemt mens Rømt, I think Sigvart jumped off ship in Mobile.

Difficult to read what Alexander did in -81

Former Owners and name of Bark Globus and final destiny.

Info comes from a enormous huge google link "Norske skipsforlis 1911" Norwegian shipwreck 1911;

Google; Bark Globus 1911, open the link and read (in Norwegian) 25 mm down page following info;

Build 1879, unknown name and owner
- 1886 owned by T.E.Call, Portsmouth, USA, name was Furness Abbey
- 1889 sold to J.G.Morse, Boston.USA
- 1890 sold to Scamell Bros, N.Y. USA
- 1892 sold Globus Comapany, Ths. S. Falck, Stavanger, Norway and changed name to Globus
- 1911 Mai 10. Globus arrived St. Thomas in Carribean on way to Jamaica with timber from Riga, Latvia, Baltic Sea.
The ship must have been in a severe storm since she was leaking with rudder damage.

Bark Globus was condemned and sold for scrapping.

Apropo Mobile.
In Dec. 1900 Bark Globus of Stavanger, shipmaster Aage Ueland, was in Mobile, Alabama, USA, see here
All 7 crew members were from Stavanger.

Hmmm.... Interesting. I guess he would just sign on another vessel for the trip back to Europe. I have Sigvart in the England & Wales census for 1911 resident in Newport. I'll research the earlier censuses

Thanks to community members for help to date. Interesting day yesterday at the UK National Archives in Kew, S W London .. !!! Summary story so far :

1 1874 - Sigvart born 30 May, Stavanger from his father's second marriage . Thanks to this site, I now have good details of his parents, grandparents and siblings in Norway.

2. 1892 - Sigvart enlists in Norwegian merchant fleet Stavanger (Roll No 6845). Serves on 3 vessels over next 2 years, and apparently jumps ship from the vessel Agathe in Mobile, Alabama, USA in October 1893. (Is this a serious offence - might it make him reluctant to return to Norway - or was this a fairly common occurrence ??? Does he stay in Mobile or elsewhere in USA - what entry and registration formalities on foreigners at that time ?? How does he get back to Europe ??)

3. 1911. Census for England & Wales shows him as sailor in merchant fleet, resident in the port area of Newport, S Wales, lists him as a Brisitsh subject with birth place Norway. Record shows him married to and living with wife Rose (age 48), having 7 children all still alive of which Rose Midred (age 25), Alexander (15) and Cuthbert (13) still living at home. All four born in Newport. I can find no record of their marriage or any of these births, nor any reference in previous two censuses.

4. 1925. Rose (Rosina) Gabrielson (spelled with "o") dies in Newport.

5. !926. Sigvart's second marriage (aged 56) on 16 August to my grandmother Agnes Andrine Arnesen, born Newport 1891. (Her father Axel Arnesen and her siblings and Norwegian ancestors also referred to on this community site) Occupation given as rigger at the steel tube works.

6. 1955 Sigvart dies Newport, S Wales.

Grateful for any further info which would help fill in the gaps

Hello.

I am Klepp62 in Jadar tree.
I see that you are seeking information about Sigvart Gabrielson ancestors.
I am not related to Sigvart. Therefore, I can not give information about him after he sailed from Norway.
You now have many answers to your questions about Sigvart in Norway. Want more?
The farm Hadland as the father of Sigvart use as surename is not from Time municipality, but from Ogna municipality, which lies about 30 km south of Time.

Sigvart sailing to New York ??

I have found a reference to a Sigvart Gabrielsen on outbound UK passengers. He is listed on the passenger manifest for the Germanic (note NOT Gemania which also plied this route) leaving Liverpool for New York on 24 April 1901. The manuscript list is not totally clear, but I am pretty confident the name is Sigvart, travelling on ticket number 25923. His age is given as 28 which ties in reasonably to his true dob in 1874. I assume the voyage would take say 10-14 days. However, when I check Ellis Island website for the list of passengers arriving in early May from this vessel, I cannot find Sigvart listed.

Grateful for any help or suggestions to solve this apparent anomaly.

Hi David,

It sounds as if you did, but sometimes going line by line through the list of passenger names you will find the one you seek. The search engine is not always pliant enough.

This may be your Sigvart. Looking at the orginal manifest on Ancestry.com, the name especially first name is very difficult to read. Could be Sigvart but as you can see the transcriber took some liberties with the spelling. He lists himself as 25 and a sailor on the manifest. He is listed as travelling to Gunder Torkildsen ? New York. Also difficult to read but my best guess. This is the only arrival date for the Germanic that fits his leaving date.

Name: Lymert Gabrielsen
Arrival Date: 1 May 1901
Birth Year: abt 1876
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Germanic

Hi David
not sure if you now have this information but it might fill in some gaps.
Rose, nee Evans, (also known as Rosina) was my Great Grandmother. She was married to my Great Grandfather, Robert Murison before she met Sigvart and married him . Robert died of a heart attack whilst captain of a steamer in 1898, and is buried in Spain.
Rose ran an hotel in the Newport Docks area and probably met Sigvart there.
The children you mention are from Robert and Roses marriage. These were Samuel,Edith, Alexander, Cuthbert,Mildred, Alexander and Robert (my Grandfather)
Some of the dates I know:-
When they married they first lived in Rodney Parade- 1912
Then 174a Chepstow Road, Maindee (a flat above Wolfe & Pawnbrokers,Jewellers and Outfitters) -1924
This became Townsend, Newport LTD., Provision Merchants 1925.
By this time Sigvart had given up sailing and was a rigger at steel tube works.
His wife Rose died 4 Dec 1925 and he went to live at 8 Redland Street Newport, marrying Agnes Andrine in 1926.
Hope this helps

Bob, pleasant surprise for the New Year to hear from you. Yes, I has figured out some of this from census and other records.

Community folks have been really helpful, but Sigvart's brother Alexander and their sister Dina still need further research - I have hit a wall with them

Let's get in touch by e-mail djyaw1@aol.com
