Hello All, Just joined up and take pity if I don't follow the right format. I'm sure someone will tell me. Found my Mothers family now I'm trying to find my Fathers, No family information except his name and a marriage date of 1932 in New York City, USA. Was told he was a Border Guard on the Canada, US border, then a truck driver and then worked in Bethlehem Steel in Staten Island N.Y. WW 2.
e was friendly with a family named "Knudsen"
Where do I go from this tiny bit of info.?

Typical documents to get first are the death certificate, and if he was naturalized, his naturalization papers. They will usually give you information about place and date of birth.
Another good thing is to do is to include his details with the posting, as that might give someone some good ideas that you could work with.

Hello Borge, Thank you for your reply. I wish I had more info. about him. They divorced in the late 1940's in Staten Island. I checked the SSDI and there are 6 possibles with the name. Even if I send for all 6 death cert's how will I know if I have the correct one.? I know nothing of his life or where he was born. I assume he came here from Norway as my mother came from England. On just a rumor do you think it wortwhile to check out Canadian records to see if he was actually a border guard, assuming he emigrated from Norway to Canada and then on to the USA?That's just a hunch,I thought about sending for the SSDI applications but that's $27.00 for each one, get's pricey.
I appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Del,
I would get his marriage application/license since you know that date and see who he lists as his parents. Also get the divorce papers - there may be clues there. You ought to post his name when you post on the various forums too. You can also get the info extracted for $16 instead of the $27 - that helps a little.
