More facts about Hans Hansen Hjelseth might be available within a matter of weeks. The 1920 Norwegian census is currently being transcribed and made available in searchable form at Digitalarkivet, one municipality at a time. Currently, all municipalities in Aust-Agder are available in searchable form except Arendal.

The Norwegian 1920 census for Arendal is now available in searchable form, and shows that Hans Hansen Hjelseth was still alive and living in Arendal at that time. Here is a simultaneous search in the 1910 and 1920 censuses that brings out the identity of the persons in the two matches, even if the Hjelseth surname has been dropped in 1920. His wife in the two censuses don't match equally well, but I would be inclined to view the discrepancy in birthdays as a simple error.
