Passenger Lists

There are 71548 passengers from 458 voyages in the passenger list database. The database primarily covers the New York passenger lists from 1828 to 1850 and Canadian lists from 1865 to 1875. In some cases, information about Norwegian emigrants has been supplemented with data from other sources, such as newspaper announcements, voyage accounts, or various records. Additionally, some entries from the Norwegian Police Emigration Records are included. 

Note: This database is not complete. There are many years for which no lists exist (read more about this in the article "Hunting Passenger Lists"). There are also many lists that have not yet been transcribed.

Norwegians in America, Ulvestad Database:

This database features emigrants listed in Martin Ulvestad’s Nordmændene i Amerika, Volume 2, published in 1913. It is currently limited to chapters with surnames beginning with A–L and S. So far, approximately 23,450 individuals have been registered. This is an older project that was put on hold in 2014 but has now been revitalized. The chapters covering surnames beginning with F, J, K, and L are the most recent additions, completed in 2025. Additional chapters will be added as they are completed and ready for implementation.

Note: Martin Ulvestad’s Nordmændene i Amerika Volume 1, published in 1907, appeared in two different editions. One of these was more extensive and included a substantial chapter entitled “Sammenstilling av norske Sambygdinger i Amerika", in addition to the Settlemant history. Many of the individuals listed in that chapter were not included in the 1913 volume. These entries will be added to thedatabase at a later stage.

In 2026, the entire section on the history of Norwegian settlements in America from Volume 1 of Ulvestad’s 1907 edition was translated into English and added to the database. This material is now also searchable. As a result, many individuals whose biographical entries have not yet been transcribed into the Ulvestad Register can still be found through references to them in the Settlement History.
