Built in 1900 for the Dominion Line as the "Commonwealth" by Harland & Wolff, Belfast. She had a tonnage of 12,097 tons gross, 9,645 under deck and 7,717 net. Poop 99 feet long; Bridge Deck 338 feet; Forecastle 67 feet. She had one funnel, two masts and twin screws. Propulsion: Triple expansion engines with 6 cylinders of 29 1/2, 50 & (4) 58 inches diameter respectively and stroke 54 inches. The engine was built by Harland & Wolff and delivered 988 nominal horsepower, giving the ship a service speed of 16 knots. There was accommodation for 250-1st, 250-2nd and 800-3rd class passengers. In November 1903 she was taken over by White Star Line when they took over Dominion Line's Boston and Mediterranean services. She was renamed Canopic.
