                      | - The NorwayHeritage transcription project is aiming to get all the pre 1875 Norwegian emigrants entered in the Emigrants 1825-1875 database which can be accessed online. The plan is to expand the data for individuals after the primary data has been transcribed from passenger lists and church out-migrants registers. Join the group of volunteers dedicated to make this information available to living and coming generations.

  - If you are working on a list, please post the information about that to this forum, so that we can prevent double work
 - If you have any questions regarding the transcription please post to this forum

Roll and list numbers for indexed NARA arrivals to New York 1828 - 1850.
(There are also other ships which are not indexed, keep an eye out for those, check the year indexes!)
Beginning January 1st 1820, the U.S. Government required passenger lists to be filed by the ship master with the collector of Customs in the port of entry. Many of these lists have survived and are available at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA):

All Canadian microfilm reels are available by Inter Library Loan [ILL]. Inter Library Loan [ILL]. The Latter Day Saints [LDS] Family History Centers [FHC], have copies of the earliest Canadian arrivals ... details below.

If you already know the ship name and arrival date, you are also able to request photocopies of the passenger list from the NAC. You will find details of how to submit a request, by mail, email or by Fax. The Record Group which you need to quote is ______ RG 76 _______

For the emigrants departing in the period between 1852, and 1865, the church out-migrants registers are the best to use, and the only source where passenger lists have not survived.

 Histform - special signs: signs * @ !! ??

When transcribing the lists we will often run into problems concerning the way to handle some information in the lists, to fit in the database format. Some Norwegian historians were working on a project in finding a standard for transcription of historical data from censuses to digital databases. Their work was completed in 1995, and the standard was named "Histform".

"Histform" gives instructions and a format for the registration of the Norwegian censuses from 1865 to 1910, but the system is also very suitable for the registering of other sources, like the passenger lists. The idea was to find a common computerizing format for the censuses. What we have adopted from the standard is the usage of the special signs.

 Special signs:
?? signifies that the handwriting in the original is indistinct or illegible. Part of a name, or an entire name might not be possible to decipher. Why do we need to use double ??, instead of a single ?. Answer: in some sources there might be a question sign (?) entered by the compiler. If we use the sign alone, we will not be able to part it from question signs in the original source. How do we use it? Example:

Ref Name Patronymic Farm/surname Age Sex status
 1 !! !! Holfeldt 29 f Mrs.
 2 Wilhelm !! Ant??ick 29 m
 3 Hendrick !! Sandemo?? 30 m

!! signifies that this information in the source must be wrong for obvious reasons. !! alone in a field means that the information is missing, see example above. The reason for using double !! is the same as described above.

@ is used as a separator between two alternative readings of the original when it is impossible to decide which is the correct one.

% indicates stricken out text in the source. If a word or a sentence is stricken out it is marked with a % in front and behind the stricken out word. Example: The name "Andreas" is stricken out: %Andreas%

 * after a piece of information, e.g. a patronymic or surname/farm name, indicates that the information is not given in the original, but included by the transcriber on the basis of other information given in the source, Like if there are "repeat signs" in the original, or like in the example below. Martha is not mentioned by surname, but she is the wife of Torkel Sjursen Opstvedt, and the Opstvedt* name is added to Martha's information. Sjur is noted as son, so the patronymic should be Thorkelsen*, and surname Opstvedt*:

Ref Name Patronymic Farm/surname Age Sex Status
 1 Torkel Sjursen Opstvedt 44 m
 2 Martha Johannesdatter Opstvedt* 39 f wife
 3 Sjur Torkelsen* Opstvedt* 8-½ m son

Why do we use the * to fill in missing information? Answer: When making a database searchable, people will not be able to find persons if they are entered only as "Ole - son" or "Ole do." (do. = ditto). We need to enter as much of the name in the different fields as we can with reasonable judgement extract from the original source.

Additional information which is not found in the original source, is add in the "Additional info" column.

 Database format:

We can use different formats for the transcriptions.
 Excel
 Word
 Web format (table)
 Lotus 1-2-3
 Quattro Pro
 dBase
 Text file

In the table below you see what fields to include in the top row of your excel sheet. To have them all displayed I have split the table it in two lines (don't do that!)

 Ref - Name - Patronymic - Farm/Surname - Age - Sex - Status - Occupation - Ship

 Captain - Year - Departure - Arrival - Residence/origin - Destination - Remarks - Additional - Source

We will post some sample/template files here soon for download

                      | Jo Anne, you have really been busy I see.
The lists that you obtained copies of are now marked with blue in the index. If someone wants to request a list for transcribing they can see which ones are available. I see that you have listed the LORENA, but that one seams to have been transcribed already. We do also have several copies of Quebec lists available for 1872 and 1873 if anyone are specially interested in working on specific years.

A good tip when transcribing the early lists is to use Gerhard Naeseth's work as a guide if you get stuck on some spellings of names.

                      | I am now making copies of the 1870 Quebec lists. There are some very nice and clear lists so if anyone wants to have a go with the transcriptions, there are some nice and easy ones to start with. Check this example from the list of the bark Tanaro sailing from Risør:

                      | I have copied the following lists: 1846 - Olof Kyrre, Kong Sverre, Industrie, Norden, Bowditch, Juno, Washington, Elizabeth Bruce, Sultan, Columbo, Genio, St. Patrick, Agder.
 1847 - Albion, Tricolor, Tricolor.

                      | Jo Anne, Trond might be able to help with some of the names on the Porsgrunn lists (the ones you have copied for 1846,) at least if any of the emigrants were from Telemark |

                      | I have started to put a note at the bottom of the passenger list indicating the total number of passengers, not just the Norwegians. Sometimes there were only a few Norwegians and it would be interesting to know the total number of passengers. |

                      | Don't go copying passenger lists for Norwegian ships to Quebec 1865 - 1875 without checking with me first, I have copied and scanned almost all of them, with some very few exeptions |

                      | I have tried to find passenger lists for 1856 but the year seems to be missing. Are there not records or not as yet transcribeld. The list I am interested in would be the June and early July list. Walt Nelson |

                      | No, there are no surviving passenger lists for Norwegian departures in 1856 |

Hi, and thanks for offering to help. Do you want me to send you a scanned list, or do you have access to lists where you live?

                      | Hi, Borge.
 I live in New Zealand.

I would be interested in helping transcribe the list of passengers on 1872 Hovding (Oslo, Norway to Napier, NZ) as a number of my ancestors arrived on this ship and settled in Norsewood.

 Is this possible?

I am also trying to get copies of the 1872 Hovding arrival at Napier, NZ, from our National Archives to compare names (detect name changes) and trace what happened to them.

(My LIVING grandmother was born in 1906 and will have memories of some of the immigrants &/or their children.)
