Hi All

Does anyone have any ideas of other avenues?

My great grandfather is Charles Barry born 28 April 1851 Larvik Norway. I have heard his real name sounds like Carl Bergsted ( I sent letters to all my family who knew him).

I have found his naturalization certificate and he was even naturalised as Charles Barry so no lead.

He said he is a Norwegian who came to Australia from America in the year 1880 on the ship the Cheshire. No luck cannot locate this ship in the time frame.

He states in various documents his mother is Christina Hansen/Hansten/Holstein and his father is Nils/Neils Barry or Neilson Barry. His fathers occupation has been listed on different documents as Farmer or Blacksmith.

I am at a loss and wonder if anyone can give any suggestions?

Thanks

Chris

From my surfing around - Larvik in Vestfold is a city and there is no bygdebok for it. He may have come from the surrounding area and just put the name of the nearest city as his place of birth. However, he could have been born there, too. LDS has extensively microfilmed Larvik church records -

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=248314&disp=Kirkeb%C3%B8ker++

The baptism (Døpte) for 1851 would be on microfilm #278235. They also have the moving in and out (Innflyttede & Utflyttede) microfilms that could give you the date of his emigration.

Hi

Thanks for that, I will find out where I can view the microfiche. I haven't used the LDS Family History centres yet.

Much appreciated

Hi,
just some input about the norwegian "naming conventions"...

The norwegian equivalent for the english name "Charles" would be either Carl or Karl.

His mothers name could probably be Christina Hansdatter (ie. the daughter of Hans) and his father would be Niels something...

Since Charles' father was a man called Niels, maybe you should be looking for christening records of a boy named Carl Nielsen (ie. "Karl Nilsen")...?

On LDS, I found one Carl Ludvig Nilsen

CARL LUDVIG NILSEN, Birth: 28 AUG 1854, Christening: 29 OCT 1854, Skoger, Vestfold, Norway, parents: NIELS BORGERSEN & CHRISTIANE HANSDR

He looks to be born a few years after the date you had, but it could still be a clue..., at least it is very close to the city of Larvik, Vestfold county.
Maybe Borgersen became "Barry"...???

Hi

Thank you for that, it's always possible!!!! I find back then it wasn't unusual for people to be out on the birth dates. Also it was 1915 before he got Naturalised so easily out.

I much appreciate your help. The Hansdatter surname had crossed my mind after reading about naming conventions.

I don't think Barry would have a Norwegian translation? All his Grandkids (my Aunites and Uncles) say sounds like Bourksted or Bergsted so it's worth a check.

thanks

Chris
