In this database you will be able to find ships, not only those which departed directly from Norway, but also other transatlantic ships which carried emigrants. You may search for a ship by entering the first letter of the name. Entering the first letter will return a list of all ships with names staring on that letter. Entering more letters, or the full name, will narrow your search. If you type the name of a ship, the search will take you directly to the page containing information about that ship, if there is only one ship by that name in the database. If you do not narrow your search, or there are several ships by the same name, the search will take you to a list of those names. The list contains different columns:

Type Ship Shipowner or operator BuiltNorwegian departures Transatlantic voyages
Kind of ship:
S/S = steamship
Bark (Barque), Schooner or Brig - tells you how the ship was rigged - a Ship (or Frigate) = a full rigged sailing ship. In many cases you will find a link to more information about the term given.
This column gives the name of the ship, clicking on the link takes you to a page with more information about the ship, and in some cases a picture This column gives the name of the owner or operator. Some ships were in the ownership of different companies through time, or they were chartered. This column gives you the year when the ship was built, or launched Linked years in this column takes you to an index of Norwegian departures, from that list you might find links to a passenger list or more detailed sailing schedules (click on the small icons in the "Details" column, see below). From the sailing lists you might find a link to corresponding ships in the Emigrant ship arrival database. Linked years in this column takes you to a list showing the Authorization & Routes for the shipping company (Line) that speciffic year, you might also find a list of ships operated by that line the selected year.
