I am looking to find which ship my great great grandfather and his family came over from Norway on.

I have a letter from the
ARKIVVERKET
STATSARKIVET I TRONDHEIM

It says that
"This family is found in the emigrant protocols of Trondheim Police Authority under the numbers 2873 to 2880 in 1888:
Ole Johnsen, 50 years old, his wife Beret, 46 years old and the children Ole, 19, Erik, 11, Osten, 8, Johan, 4 1/2, and Kari 11 months old. The family came from Horg and they were bound for New York according to contract with the CUNARD line from May 16,1888. The tickets were paid in America.

I see that most of the Cunard lines came from Liverpool to America. So the family came from Horg then to Liverpool, England and then took a Cunard ship to New York, America in May of 1888.

How can I find the Cunard ship they took and also find out who paid there passage??

Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Mrs. Nevada Boslet

Hello Nevada

The family is registered to leave on the Wilson Line ship S/S Hero from Trondheim to Hull in England. From Hull they had to travel by train to Liverpool where they would board the Cunard Line steamer. You should start by searching through the passenger lists of Cunard Line ship arriving to new York 2-3 weeks after the departure from Norway. The lists can be obtained from NARA, ILL or LDS. To find out more I recommend our article "Hunting Passenger Lists".
