I am hoping some kind soul can help me figure out how to find information on my great-grandfather’s passage from Norway to the US.
Here is what I know: Karl Olsen Heggernæs (born 1868) is listed in the digitalarkivet as having traveled from the port of Bergen on the Stjerne Linie (White Star) departing March 18, 1887 (http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIBERG&gardpostnr=21715&merk=21715#ovre)
I am trying to figure out where to look from here as to what ship he was on, if there is a manifest, and where he arrived.
If I am understanding the passages from Bergen correctly, he took another ship from Bergen to Liverpool , and then the White Star line from Liverpool to the US. Am I on the right track? I have been unable to find him arriving at Ellis Island. Could he have arrived at another port?
I greatly appreciate any tips or advice. Searching the ship’s records is new for me.

Thank you so much Børge! What a wealth of information. You have really helped me with this puzzle.
Is there an online archive of arrivals to New York in 1887? I know ellisisland.org doesn't go back that far. Is there another source to check?

Here is a free database pre Ellis Island records. It is not quite complete:

In 1887 White Star operated routes to New York, Philadelphia and Boston, these lists are available on a paid database on Ancestry.com. You can access it at most local Family History Centers and large local libraries are starting to have the subscription.
That said, I looked in Ancestry.com and could not find any records in 1887 for Karl/Carl Olsen/Olsen Haggernaes. I tried looking for the people from Hammer that were listed with him and could not find them either. They may be there but I could not find them.
Maybe they got "bumped" and went to Canada instead. |

Thank you for the great castlegarden.org link and the Ancestry tip. I have an Ancestry sub, so I spent the evening going line-by-line through the April 1887 Germanic manifests. 47 pages later and I did not find Karl or the others he would have sailed with. There are many pages in this particular manifest that are unreadable, so he may be hidden in there somewhere.
One thing I noticed is that the manifest lists the date as April 2nd vs. April 4th. Is that of any issue? Also, do any of you know any other ship he may have travelled on or port he may have arrived at?
