Would there be a possibility that Ggrandfather Mathias Abrahamson came to America onboard a freighter vessel. In some of the writings there is one line that suggests this is the way he traveled when he paid a partial fare.

Answer to your question: Yes, everything is possible, and we se many sailors "jumping ship" and becoming immigrants in that way.
