I would like to find the immegration and ship records on my g-grandfather Halvor Brenden. From information I have, he immegrated in the early 1850's. He fought with the Wisc 15th during the Civil War. Other information I hame on him is: 1. Private in Company E
15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry
The Scandinavian Regiment
Born March 21, 1834 or 1835, Storrustebrenden, Kingdom of Norway
Parents were Ole Halvorson Huset (1___-18__) and ____________________ (1___-18__)
Immigrated to America, early 1850's

Any help I can get would be appreciated.

Company E: ..........
Halvor O. Brenden, York, 17 Dec 1861, discharged 20 Dec.,1864
.....

Source: Colonel Heg and His Boys: A Norwegian Regiment in the American Civil War by Waldemar Ager, publ. 2000

Where is York? The roster of Company E indicates others from York. Perhaps investigation into the Norwegian emigrants who first arrived in the York area will give more hints as to the area of his origin.

Few emigration records out of Norway exist for years as early as the 1850's. It would be helpful to know what part of Norway he came from and therefore be able to deduce the most likely port of departure.

Storruste is a farmname in the Hedal area of Sør Aurdal, Oppland, and there is one Halvor christened there on 21 JUN 1835, parents Ole Halvorsen & Oloug Torgrimsdr.

There are also some Brenden farms in the neighboring Bagn area.

Possible siblings:
Kari, chr 16 MAR 1828 Sør Aurdal, Oppland
Olia, chr 06 JUN 1830 Sør Aurdal, Oppland
Ronnoug, chr 14 OCT 1832 Sør Aurdal, Oppland
Kari, chr 17 JUN 1838 Sør Aurdal, Oppland
Ragnild, chr 02 Jan 1844 Sør Aurdal, Oppland

Have not been able to find any birthdate for Halvor...

Vesterheim website lists Halvor as born in Torpa, Hedalen, Valders, Norway.
http://vesterheim.org/CivilWar/db/b/bre/001167.html

US 1900 federal census for Mitchell Co. IA he is listed with immigration year of 1857...
I can't find him in Mitchell Co. in the 1910 census to check that listing of immigration year.

Thank you for the information so far received. I know Halvor was born 21 March 1835, apparently in Torpa, Hedalen, Valders or Opland. I am not familar with these areas. Are these like counties or states we have in the USA? Family conversation revealed he was raised by an aunt and uncle but I have not been able to document. Apparently, Halvor was a private man and did not say much about his youth and some say he came to America with a sister possibly named Ragnild, which would go with a possible sibling jwiborg said.

In Canada the various districts are each a province, in the US each a state, in Switzerland each a canton, in Norway each a fylke, etc. etc. The various countries of the world have their own languages and therefore many unique words for their governmental divisions. Governmental powers are also divided differently according to the laws of each country so it can be difficult to say they are 'like' each other, but on a map it might appear so.

Oppland is a fylke.

Some of the Sør-Aurdal, Hedal, Oppland, Norway parish records have been microfilmed and available online:

You can look at the Migration records to find out when he signed out of the parish.

There are links on this site for Norwegian dictionaries to help you read the records, a few basic words are all you need.

If you look at the Index of Departures on this site, in 1857 almost all voyages from Norway went to Canada. Unfortunately, they are no official Canadian passenger lists until 1865. Recommend you read some of the articles on this site about migration and routes that emigrants used at different periods.

Then I'm quite confident this must be your man, christened 21 JUN 1835 with parents Ole Halvorsen & Oloug Torgrimsdr.

The Storruste farm is located in the Hedal valley in Sør Aurdal municipality in Oppland county.
The Hedal valley is a part of what we call Valdres, a landscape consisting of the 6 municipalities Nord-Aurdal, Sør-Aurdal, Øystre Slidre, Vestre Slidre, Vang and Etnedal.

Its a very rural area, with a total # of inhabitants equal to 18.000 for the whole Valdres region.

The LDS record for OLAU TORGRIMSEN, christened Jan 1 1808 shows her parents as TORGRIM ANDERSEN and KAREN GUDMUNDSDR. She married OLE HALVORDSEN Sept 23 1827 in Sor Aurdal, Oppland.

Hi,
I have reasons to believe that this must be the Storrustebrenden farm in Hedalen:

Located in Vassfaret - for many outdoor people in Norway one of the biggest symbols of wilderness and untouched countryside. Made famous by the books of Mikkjel Fønhus, Edvard Elsrud and Nils Viker. Since 1985 a wildlife reserve.

From the Valdres parish transcripts - under Nord Aurdal until 1807 - then it is Sør Aurdal
and until mid 1807 entries were for baptisms and burials, not a birth and death date.

Halvor Olesen was chr. 21 June 1835 - born 21 May at Branden under Storustoe in Hedalen, Sør Aurdal, Oppland

His oldest sister, Kari born 2 Feb 1828, and chr. 16 Mar, died in 1828 at the age of 4 months - there are two listings for her death - one on 26 June and one on 26 July - would need to check the films to confirm which is correct.

marriage of 1827 Sept 23,
Ole Halvordsen Storusteeie 22 and Oloug Torgrimsd Fekjer 22

marr of Ole's parents - 1797 Oct 1 Hedalen Halver Olsen Stor Rustoeeie & Olia Olsd Fekier

The Olau Torgrimsdatter, who was born Dec 16 1807 and bapt. 1808 1 Jan, was born to Torgrim Andersen Aaslie & Karen Gudmundsd (actually her patronymic probably should be Gjermundsdatter )-
Marr. 1798 Oct 7 Torgrim Andersen Aaslie & Kari Jermundsd Lie - They had many children, the last ones born at Steensrud
.
in 1801 this family is at Aaslie with his parents and a couple brothers

There is another family of interest -
The Torgrim Olsen Fekier family has a Olia born in 1802, but have not found an Oloug.
This family is at Feker Søndere in 1801
