I am trying to find information about my great-grandfather, Hans Moe. He was born around 1869, came to America around 1873 and died in Chicago in 1849. His father was Lars Moe and his mother's first name was Christina. He had a brother, Martin and sister Ella who were also born in Norway. I believe his family came from somewhere near Bergen.
Some of famly could have been Aspelmo while in Norway, but I'm not positive how that fits in.

The 1880 census has Ella being born in Illinois about 1874. How much research have you done on your ancestors?

Diane,
Go through all the US censuses and other US information about this family that you have or can find. Organize the details carefully. You want names, all vital dates (like birth, marriage, year of immigration and death) for each person -- but MOST especially for those who were born in Norway and emigrated.
The details can be very important to finding them in Norway. So be careful and thorough.

We assume that Hans did not die in 1849 - 10 years before the birth you list for him. (You can edit your posting to correct that.)
What is the source of your "Aspelmo" information? How was it used?

Oops. yes, Hans died in 1949.
I have checked the census reports. I'm pretty new at this genealogy thing and unfortunately my father grew up in a family and time where the "old country" wasn't discussed too much.

As for the Aspelmo, my father is really sure when the name was used, it was something that was mentioned, but my dad was only 10 and didn't dig any further.

Do I understand this correctly that sometimes the "farm" name was used as the surname, especially for emigration? Thank you so much for this info...I'll work on those dots!!

Your last name could come from the farm name Moe being used as a surname. There are more than 200 farms by the name Mo (= Moe) or ending with mo - example "Aspelmo". Finding your Hans Moe would not be easy without some indication of where in Norway he may have been born.

Hi. Aspelmo may be more of clue than it appears. There is a family of the last name "Aspølmo leaving through Trondheim in 1873--a married woman named Kristine age 32 resident of Vefsen and two children Hans age 4 and Martin age 2, destination Chicago. In 1872 there is a Lars Asbalmoe, a painted age 39 also a resident of Vefsen. This is from the database at the digitalarkivet. Hope this helps.
