Can anyone help a hapless dodo to find his family tree from Ibestad, Troms. My great grandfather was Magnus Bertin Hansen born in 1874 mentioned on the 1875 census , his father was called Hans O. Mikkelsen but no more is known. How do I go back further in time??

Ibestad municipality is located to the northern part of Norway on an island named Rolla in the southern part of Troms county

You did find Magnus Bertin in the 1875 census on farm Bredvold, his mother was Erikka M. Pedersdatter, 7 children, Mikal down page was a servant and fisherman, Hans O. Mikkelsen owned the farm, he also was a fisherman as the oldest son Mikkel born 1857.

The same family in 1865, The same Mikkel, age 20, worked as a servant, Anna K. Hansdatter age 26 also worked as a servant.
Widow Johanna Rasmusdatter age 46, "kaarkone" means she was former owner of the farm and when she sold the farm (or retired) she set up a contract which secured her support from the new owner as free room and food for the rest of her life, she had a daughter Jonatina age 12. If they were familymembers the census dont tell us.
The following persons are from a subfarm under Bredvold.

Here are the scanned church books for Ibestad, click on "Folketellinger og mantall" bottom page for searcing the cesuses, do the same for the existing "bygdebøker, tidsskrifter o.l." for the local historian "Bygdebøker", not online.
It looks like Digitalrkivet is updating so its temporary down now and then.

Ibestad old church from about 1200-1300 was unfortunately teared down in 1860, the new Ibestad church were Magnus Bertin Hansen´s confirmation was taken place about 1891 was build 1880-81

Good luck.
