Thanks all. It is a bit confusing as Ohnstad is often used interchaneably with Onstad. Anyway Anne came from Norway. I believe Elling /Ellend/ or Allen did also.

Hi,
Ohnstad (800 persons) and Onstad (3500 persons) living in Norway is the same name.
Ohnstad is an older spelling.
The pronunciation is the same.

I have from the 1900 census 192 people living on Ohnstad/Onstad farms in following municipalities and counties in Norway:
13 in Askim and 24 in Skibtvedt, Østfold county
14 in Aurdal and 19 in Ø. Slidre, Oppland county
14 in Nissedal, Telemark county
99 in Aurland, Sogn og Fjordane county
9 in Trondenes, Troms county

From the emigration records from Oslo and Bergen I found Onstad/Ohnstad emigrants from Ø. Slidre, Skiaker/Sjåk (Oppland county) Ådalen (Buskerud county) Aurland and Lærdal (Sogn og Fjordane county)

The Elling name exist in the Onstad family in Trondenes, 3 members, the parents are supported by a daughter living in USA.

Ellen is americanized, 100% sure, but from what: Erling, Erlend, Erlen, Elling.

Elling Webjørnsen Ohnstad, shoe makers son, born 1880 emigrated from Aurland parish Jan.1886?

About when was he born?

Hi Kåre & Wally,

Not to be contradictory but Ellen, as a male name, is used with some frequency in Hallingdal particularly in Nes & Flå...

Really Jackie, life is a learning, I have always looked on Ellen as a female name, perhaps its an older spelling from 1600-1700 or early 1800 in Hallingdal.

I have two very unusual mans name in 1900 simulare to Ellen: Elleng and Ellend.

Ellen J. Onstad, J. could be from a middle name or most likely the initials to his fathers first name.
Could be in varies spellings, most common was John, Jens, Johan, Johannes and Jacob.
Then Jahn, Jarand, Jalmar, Joakim, Jonas etc.

Hi!

If this Ellend is the same fellow as before, his death date of 25 Nov 1925 is found in the death records of the Washington Secretary of State site. His age in that record is 62 years which means he should be in the 1865 census. Maybe here in Aurland:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=5&filnamn=f61421&gardpostnr=106&personpostnr=573&merk=573#ovre

And here is another E***** Ohnstad in the North Dakota death index online:
OHNSTAD, ELLING, 07/24/1958 Walsh, MALE, 87 Years, 10/03/1870, North Dakota Walsh

Mathilda and E**** or A**** got divorced where in North Dakota?

Happy New Year!

Yes Ellend was born out of wedlock May 7 1865, see #42
his parents were Oline Ellendsdatter and Jens Ingebretsen from Sagøen in Lærdal parish.
Oline Ellendsdatter was a twin (her sister was Ingjegjør) they were born Sept 16 1839, see #51 &52
their father was Ellend Thorbjørnsen Ohnstad.
Ellend Torbjørnsen with his first wife in 1801
Ellends parents are also in this census record.
Ellend Jenssen Ohnstad was confirmed June 13 1880, see #17

Please forgive me, I am seeking for accuracy. Saying this, I know that Allen J Onstad married Mathilda Iverson on Dec.1 1904, in Owatonna, Minnesota. The marriage was recorded in Steele County Book H-page page 19.
However the divorce was recorded in Mclean County, North Dakota records. The first name starts with an E and the rest in question. The last name is spelled Onstad.
My grandmother came here in 1875. Her second husband came in 1870.

Hi Wally,

So you are exploring which of the E**** Ohnstad males might be the right one to have married your grandmother? Your earlier research question was to either eliminate or accept the Ellend Ohnstad who married Anne Langland as a possible candidate? Did your grandmother have any children with her Ohnstad? One record source which might help you, provided they stayed in Minnesota long enough for it, is the 1905 Minnesota State Census (it is on Ancestry). It would give you another opportunity for a record in which his first name and biographical data are given. Likewise a baptismal or birth record for any child of theirs might also reveal his name again. As it is, Freeborn county (where the Ellend and Anne family lived)borders Steele County (where your grandmother married Ohnstad) so a connection is not outside the realm of possibility.

Good Luck,

Jackie M.
