hi Jackie

since this was an old discussion, it might be out of focus now, but I have som additional info on Anton L Westgard:
By "coincidence" I drove through the Westgard Pass in White Mountains, CA this summer, and since my last name is Westgaard I decided to find out who this pass was named after. I relatively fast found out that AL Westgard was VP of Transcontinental Highways and that he married a woman called Mathilde Ljolie. This is a misspelling; her name was Mathilde Sjolie and came from the small village of Rendal, Norway, and she was the niece of my great great grandmother Goro, i.e cousin of my great grandfather. It says in the community history book that Mathilde married engineer Anton Vestgard from the village of Storelvdal, Norway (next to the village of Rendal above) in USA and that she came back with the children after some years and died there at her grandfathers farm in 1909. This corresponds with the article in "Paving the way" about Anton. So I think AL Westgard was another man than indicated in discussions above.Westgard or Westgaard means the western farm opposed to the eastern, northern, southern farms and is common in many villages in Norway. The original farms were split up in the families and renamed after their geographical position. Upper and Lower is also common farm names. My Westgaard name comes from another part of Norway, so the Anton link is on my mothers side.

Kind regards Knut W

Hi Jan Peter,

Thanks for the notice about Ole W.L. Westgard's petition in Ancestry. I don't have Ancestry on my home computer but use at the library. I looked at his entry and it tells he arrived US at Galveston, Texas on 3 Mar 1888, he is employed as a draftsman, his birthdate is given as 19 Mar 1871 and Anthon L. Westgard, Civil engineer of 13 E 14th St, New York City was the witness to the naturalization.

Further in the immigration database is Ole Westgard's application for a passport and he gives his birthdate as 19 Mar 1872, that he left through Fredrikstad Norway on 21 Nov 1888 and lived in various places in US from 1888 to 1914, employed as surveyor and drafting maps. By the date of his app he was going by W.O.L. Westgard--which matches how he appears in the 1910 & 1920 censuses as "William Westgard." His wife's maiden name is given as Gina Tallackson and they had at least two children the daughter Loraine mentioned earlier and a son Colin b about 1917 seen in the 1920 census.

I'm certain he is in "the family."

Thanks for your help with this.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Hei Knut,

Thanks for this "blast from the past". As I recall, I saw the show Paving the Way on TV and wanted to find more about the origins of Anton L Westgard. There was an interview with him published in the 19teens in which he said he was from Hamar. Hamar is 110km from Stor-elvdal, I guess I'll have to go back and re read the whole post and refresh my memory.

How funny that you're related through his first wife Mathilda and get your last name from some other connection. Genealogy is strange!

Hi - I hope I'm not to late to try this...
I'm also related to Anton. He was born Anton Larsen. As far as I know he and his brother Ole (who also worked in the same line of job, but mostly in New York - but later joined Anton in the Park To Park Project) took the Westgard name after their grand grandmother father whom was named Engbret Olsen Westgaard. He was born in Storelvdal in 1755.
They changed their name from Lasen to Westgard and Anton kept the "L" as a middel name. After my knowledge Anton had 12 siblings. My grandmother on my mothers side Magnhild Ranveig Larsen was one of his youngest sisters. Anton has authored several books and maps, he also was a great photographer; Pictures and film. You can find plenty about him on the net, try http://depthoffieldproductions.pbworks.com/w/page/17514210/Westgard
Among his books I found one book he had sent to my grandmother calles "Tales of a Pathfinder". You can read this book onlin(see link from depthoffieldproductions.......... Anton was in fact called The Pathfinder - and there was a car produced between 1912 and 1916 name Pathfinder. I've seen one under restauration in Oslo.
Regards Jon V.

Hei Jackie
Yes this is much the same I've got, but there is two children missing:
(My grandmother) Magnhild Ranveig born 01.november 1878
and Ingrid Margrethe born 03. february 1880 (my mother - the only child of Magnhild - have her name after this ant).
By the way; the link for Ingeborg Gunhild is wrong - it refers to the same as for Valborg Johanne Leontine !
