My grandfather Edvard B. Pettersen came from Trondheim, Norway to Georgeville, Minnesota in 1903. His fare was paid for by his cousin Hans Amundson who was living in Minnesota at the time. I have been trying to find a link between these two people but not having much success? I was hoping there might be someone who could put these two families together? My grandfather changed his name from Pettersen to Eide, the family does not know why? Thanks for any help you can offer.

There were 9 Edvard Pedersen/Pettersens who left from Trondheim in 1903. Giving his age would have been a good idea.

Luckily one lists his intended destination as Georgeville - so that has to be your man.
1903 Trondheim departure

He's from Rødø, Nordland, Norway and you could expect the Eide is a name taken from a farm or area (most likely a farm) where he and/or his family had history. This is a very typical and normal naming custom as you can learn online.

You say Hans Amundson was his cousin -- isn't that an already determined family link? He might have been a 1st cousin, a 2nd cousin, etc. But at some point in tracking the family ancestral information they SHOULD have common ancestors. So that's where you start.

Edvard Benjamin Pettersen, age 20. Sorry about that. Another in my family has researched the family, it goes way back but no connection to an Amundson? And now the work begins. Thank you Hopkins for all the places to look. Dave

To find the connection to Hans Amundsen we need to know the names of the parents.

The name Eide is coming from Aageide.

In 1900 Edvard B. lived on Aageide in Melø in Nordland County with his father Petter Kristian Eliassen and five younger siblings.
I think Gusta Pareli Iversen was his stepmother, she and Petter Eliassen married August 27.1891 in Rødøy, Edvard Benjamin was born on Tjong in Rødøy Oct.30. 1882, his mother was Karen Marie Ellingsdatter.

His cousins father was Amund (unknown lastname), he or his wife was either a brother/sister to Petter Kristian Pettersen or Karen Marie Ellingsdatter.

Do you know when Hans Amundsen was born or when he emigrated.

Census-1900 list Hans Amundson as living in Crow River Township, Belgrade Village, Stearns county, MN.
He is born September 1864 in Norway, and emigrated about 1884. He married Anna in 1890. Anna is born May 1876 in Minnesota by Norwegian-born parents.

Census-1865 for farm Sneen in Melø sub-parish, Rødø parish, Nordland county:
Amund Johnsen 46
Maren Olsdatter 47 Rasmusdatter?
Jacobi Amundsdatter 8
Johan Amundsen 6
Hans Amundsen 1

Census-1875 list Hans Amundsen as born 1862 and a foster-son of widow Johanne Bertelsdatter on the Aag farm in Rødøy.
Johanna Dorthea Berthelsdatter, born 20 MAR 1818, Rødøy, Nordland, Father: Berthel Joensen
Johanna Dorthea Berthelsdatter (21) & Iver Sandberg Johannesen, Marriage: 21 OCT 1838, Meløy, Nordland

Hans A. Aag (19) from Melø emigrating to Wilmar, MN on 29 May 1884. He is listed together with 5 other Aag's from Melø.

His christening name is Hans Ovid, and he is born 25 OCT 1864.
His mother is listed as Maren Rasmusdatter in the chr record, while Maren Olsdatter in the census..
I believe Rasmusdatter must be her right patronymic, because that's what she's called in all the chr records for their other children as well:
Rasmus Claus Johan Amundsen, b. 02 JUL 1845, Meløy, Nordland
Sofie Eline Amundsdr, b. 20 JUN 1848, Meløy, Nordland
Anna Margrethe Amundsdr, b. 03 MAR 1852, Meløy, Nordland
Jacobi Schjoning Amundsdr, b. 27 OCT 1855, Meløy, Nordland
Johan Christian Amundsen, b. 24 JUL 1860, Meløy, Nordland

Amund Johan Johnsen Bolgen (27) & Maren Johanne Rasmusdatter Langnes (24)
Marriage: 17 JUL 1842, Meløy, Nordland
His father: John Amundsen
Her father: Rasmus Olsen

I can not see any obvious relationship between Hans and Edvard, other than that they both lived at the Aag farm(s) in Meløy. Hans looks to be adopted. The farmbook from the area "GÅRD OG GREND I MELØY" might reveal the relationship, and also what happened to his parents. Did they drown on the sea?

Jan Peter you have provided information about the parents of Hans - -

We didn't know about the 1875 Census, and would have jumped right over it - - -

There is no way we would have come up with his arrival in 1884 with the family Aag - - -

But we still haven't found the Aag family in the US Census, maybe the name changed somehow- -

We all thank for the information - -

So for those of us in the US we need to process your information for awhile - - - until later then..... all the best.

Hi,
the Aag family can be found in Belgrade village, Stearns, Minnesota, census-1900, as Pederson...

Corneilson Pederson, born Norway Jun 1844, imm. 1884
Lavina Pederson, born Norway Oct 1848, mother of 6 children, 6 alive, imm. 1884, married ab. 1871
Alfred Pederson, born Minnesota Feb 1888
Conrad Pederson, born Minnesota Sep 1890
Lena Pederson, born Minnesota Aug 1892

The other 3 children are listed in the emigration:
Peder Aag (m), born ab 1873
Iverine Aag (f), born ab 1878
Leras Aag (m), born ab 1879

Kornelius, wife Lavine and son Peder (Per) are listed just below Hans Amundsen in census-1875 for the Aag farm.

Lavina Pederson is the daughter of Johanna Dorthea Berthelsdatter, who "adopted" Hans Amundsen, according to census-1875. So Hans could have recognized Lavina as his older sister.

Lavine Christine Iversdatter
Born: 12 Oct 1849, chr 05 May 1850, Meløy, Nordland, Norway
Parents: Iver Johannesen Aag & Johanna Bertuelsdatter

Cornelius Martines Pedersen Tyrhaug-Aag (27) & Lavina Christine Ivarsdatter Aag (22)
Marriage: 10 Sep 1871, Meløy, Nordland, Norway
His father: Peder Larsen
Her father: Ivar Sandberg

Note: Iver Sandberg Johannesen, Ivar Sandberg and Iver Johannesen Aag is the same person...

Those records are not so hard to read when you get familiar with them. For Lavine's chr record above; there are 9 columns, reading (from left):
Record Number - Date of birth - Date of christening - Name of child - Legitimate or illegitimate child - Name of Parents - Name of Godparents - Chr at home - Notes (e.g. if illegitimate child)

Lavine Christine Iversdatter's record reads:
8
12th October
Do (i.e. ditto ("same as above"), see record 7; chr date is 5th May)
Lavine Christine
ægte (ie Legitimate child)
Gbr (farmer) Iver Johannesen Aag og (and) hustru (wife) Johanna Bertuelsdr.
You can also see the names of the Godparents, and that Lavine Christine was christened at home on the 26th (?) of October by Dorthea Nilsdr Aag. Under notes it says "konen introd", meaning that the wife Johanna Bertuelsdr was introduced back into the church comminity, probably on this date (May 5th)
