Unfortunately, I can not give you much info on my great-grandfather who was known as Gunder Udgarden. He began work for the Hudson Bay Company in 1858 in Canada. He may have been born abt 1828 in Norway. He married a half-breed Cree woman named Harriet Turner in Moose Factory Ontario Canada. He died sometime after 1902 in Moose Factory. His name on his marriage registration is Gunder Haagensen. I am looking for information on where he might have been born etc. Any help or direction is appreciated. I did locate a ship that arrived in Quebec in 1858 with a Gunder "Oegarden." ??
Thanks!!

More information on the above post....The name I found was Gunder A Odegaarden and he sailed from Porsgrunn April 28 1858 and arrived in Quebec on June 15 1858. It says he was from Raulandsstrand i Vinje. The ship's name was Sjofna. Hoping someone might know something about any of the above.

Hi,

Rauland and Vinje are parishes found in Telemark fylke in Norway. All the parish registers of Norway in existance are found online at the Norwegian Digital Archives. Collect as much information about your ancestor's birth date (exactly 1828 or estimated 1828) as you might find in Canada and then search the birth/baptism records for him in the parish registers in Norway.

How certain are you that Gunder Haagenson is the same man as Gunder A Odegaarden on the passenger list? The reason to be suspicious is Haagenson would usually indicate that a person's father's name was Haagen and the A initial would usually indicate the father's first name as Anders, Aslag, Asle, etc. rather than Haagen.

It was Ødegaarden farms in Vinje in Telemark County.
The intial A in the middle name indikate that his fathers given name started with A, Gunder Haagensen means the father was Haagen.
Could be a wrongspelling or two different persons.

You have information that your Gunder was from Raulandstrand in Vinje, then he was from a small countryside at lake Totak.

Hi,

Until 1859 Rauland parish was part of the Vinje district, so if this Gunder is the correct fellow, it might be advisable to also search both parish registers for him and his relations. There are also 4 Ødegaarden farms in Rauland in the 1865 census.

In the passeger list there were two brothers:
25 Gunder A Ødegaarden m Residence Raulandsstrand i Vinje
26 Svend As. Ødegaarden m Residence Raulandsstrand i Vinje
They were both to confirmation 9 Oct 1836 in Rauland nr 3 and 4 (bottom)
Gunder Aslaksen was born 29 Aug 1819. Both church books have a terrible hand writing nr 13 and nr 13

Their father Aslak Svendsen (12) in 1801 census

But this Gunder Aslaksen Ødegaarden would not use the surmame Haagansen, and the age from 1901 census is a bit off -

I agree Harald.
Haagen- Haagensen confuse me too.
Gunder and Svend Aslaksen were from "Ødegaar-Ødegaarhaug" Ødegaarden (Rauland).

Must be the same Gunder Aslaksen:
"Gaardmand" Farmer Gunder Aslaksen age 39 emigrated 1858 from farm Rorge in Rauland #7.

Perhaps Gunder had an older brother, if he grew up he could have inherit Ødegaarden.

Just wonder if Gunder Haagensen Udgaarden born 1828 in Vinger (Hedmark) could be of interest. He was one of four leaving the parish for Fredrikstad in the spring of 1850. The other was Anund Tollefsen Udgaarden (20), Martin Martinsen Maskrud (21) and Aanund Haagensen Udgaarden 20. They left for some kind of work in Fredrikstad (also known as the plank city), woodwork?

This looks very interesting Trond.
For the first time we have all three names correct.

Hi,

O so good to see there is a possible Gunder Haagenson Udgaarden. I wonder if our original querist would clarify which record indicates that her Gunder came to Canada in 1858 or if it is something other than the 1858 passenger arrival listing for Gunder Odegaarden?

If her Gunder were still in Norway in 1865, he might be in the census transcriptions of that year. FYI & curiously there are three Gunder Haagensens in the 1865 transcriptions aged 36, 37, 37 two were born in Hedmark and the third was born in "Reendalen" but living in Lille elvdalen, Hedmark.

Since he was an employee of Hudson's Bay Company, I wonder if there might be some personnel records which might illuminate more about him such as an exact birthdate, birthplace, etc. May any of our Canadian correspondents be able to help with that?

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

It was only one Gunder Haaagensen born in Vinger in the 1865 census for Norway, he was born about 1840, married, and lived in Vinger so we can exlude him.

For the threee other boys leaving Vinger for Fredrikstad 1850 with Gunder Haagensen Udgaarden, none of them are recorded in the 1865 census for Norway.
Anund Tollefesen Udgarden #10, #11 Marthin Marhinsen Masterud or #12 Anund Haagensen Udgaarden .

I don't know if it matters but I read the names of the boys leaving for Fredrikstad a little different:
#9 Gunder Haagensen, Udgaarden, (not in the 1865 census)
#10 Amund Tostensen, Udgaarden (in the 1865 census at Kirkelien)
#11 Martin Matiesen, Masterud (not in the 1865 census)
#12 Amund Haagensen, Gytterudlien under Udgaarden (in the 1865 census at Sætern)

#12 was born Dec 9 1830, mother Pige Marthe Danielsdatter, father widower Haagen Torstensen, see left page at bottom
Gunder Haagensen was also an "uægte" child, Haagen Torstensen was also his father.
Haagen Torstensen had been married to Gubiør Olsdatter, Gytterud 1806.
Gubiør Olsdatter died 1824.

Hi,

Haagen Torstenson may have married Marte as there is a widow Marte Dannelsdtr age 70 living as foderaadenke with Martin Haagenson aged 32 and his family on one of the Udgaarden farms in 1865.

The Gunder Haagenson born 1828 cannot be dismissed from being considered the same man as Gunder Upgarden in Canada, until or unless data collected in Canada matches or doesn't match the man in Vinger. I doubt that Gunder Haagenson b. 1840 is the same man as the 1828 Gunder, but the name combination appears very popular particularly in Hedmark!

It's right Haagen Torstensen and Marte Danielsdatter were married Jan 18 1834, see 7th record from top of left page. Haagen was then 47 years and Marte was 26 years.
Haagens brothers Anders and Torsten were witnesses.
Haagen and his parents and siblings in 1801
Gunders mother (Olia Jacobsdatter in the baptismal record) recorded as Sigri Jacobsdatter in the note to Amunds baptismal record, died in childbed 1828, see #25
Haagen Torstensen and Marthe Danielsdatter had their first son Tosten as a married couple Nov 23 1834, see 7th record on right page.
