My grandfather , Henrik J. Johansen Melgaard, born in Bindal, Norway 1879, left Trondheim on Sep 3rd 1908 and arrived in Quebec, Canada on Sep 19th 1908 on the S/S Virginian. His destination was apparently Winnipeg. My initial search in Canadian archives yield no information.
How do I proceed to trace his destiny further?

Do you have any info about him at all after his emigration in 1908? Did he ever return to Norway? Any letters, postcards?

No trace at all. He left Norway when my father was only 4. Never married my grandmother....
He was born in Bindal 20 September 1879. You may see what I have collectded so far here:

Death Certificates can be obtained for individuals who have died in British Columbia. Henrik Julius Melgard is listed here. Enter Melgard, in Surname 1958 in death date.

| There is a Family Tree on Ancestry.com belonging to Margot Melgard (also listed as Margot Melin) that likely contains your relative. She lists the same British Columbia Death Certificate as listed above. She also lists a son Oscar Melgard born 20 April 1909 as a son of Hendrick Julius Melgard. . She is likely descendant from him or a second wife of Hendrick. Do you have access to Ancestry.com. if not I can send her a message. |

he was married to
Gudrun Sæthre (Melgaard), born Oct 31 1887, died June 30 1960 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Their son was:
Oscar Gunward Melgaard, born April 20 1909, died Nov 22 1960 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
wife: Margaret Winnifred Olsen born Aug 28 1906 died Oct 4 1984

You probably know that Johan Hartvig Wulf Jakobsen & Bergithe Christine Olsdatter were married Jan 30 1872, see #1 - which was a little late as Otto Benjamin was born Aug 23 1871, see #32.
Their 3rd child, Eldora Julie was born April 14 1883, see #17.

Hendrick Melgard is buried at Mountain View Cemetery and Crematorium in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Two other Melgard's at the same Cemetery:
