My g. grandfather's brother, Christian Sivertsen from Sandefjord (Sandeherred), Norway, born on September 13th, 1857, emigrated to the US - I do not know when he did or where he settled. In the 1930-s his daugther Kate visited Sandefjord. She was married to P. E. Rust and had two daughters. Any information about the family greatly appreciated.

Hi,

P.E. Rust is Philip Emil Rust b. abt 1887. He and Katherine or Kate lived in Bergen, New Jersey in 1930 with their two daughters Lillian and Marion. Christian Syvertson lived in New Jersey in 1900 with wife Carinna (?) and their children in Hudson County, New Jersey.

1. LYSERTERN, CHRISTIAN (1900 U.S. Census) NJ, HUDSON, 2-WD UNION, Age: 43, Race: W, Born: NORW

Christian's date of immigration is given as 1884, his wife's as 1885 and Katy and Arthur are given as 1892. Christian's occupation is ship carpenter.

The others in the household are:
Carran (?) b. Oct 1862 Norway, age 37, married 15 years, 9 children born 6 living
Katy b. Nov 1889 Norway age 10
Arthar b. Feb 1891 Norway age 9
Maria M. b. July 1893 born New Jersey age 6
George b. May 1895 NJ age 5
Alander (Alexander?) b. Nov 1896 NJ age 3
Lillie b. ___ 1900 b. NJ aged 11/12

Kate was born in Norway abt 1889 as were her next two eldest siblings.

The last name is indexed weirdly in both HeritageQuest and Ancestry, although looking at it it does appear more like an L at the first letter rather than an S. Their address is on Davis Street.

Since there are a few more names here you might be able to find the men (and the women, provided they didn't marry or change their last name) in the SSDI at www.rootsweb.com

SYVERTSEN, CARRIE (1910 U.S. Census)
NJ, HUDSON, 2-WD UNION CITY, Age: 48, Race: W, Born: NORW,

In 1910 Christian & son George appear not to be home. Carrie Syvertsen is listed as the head of household, there is an additional child in the family named Alice age 7 b. NJ. Carrie has born 10 children 7 are living. Kate and Mary (Maria in last census) are each employed in an embroidery shop. Arthur is employed in a print shop. Alander from the 1900 census is clearly written as Alexander in 1910. The whole family is living at 204 Lewis St. Dates of immigration for Carrie, Katy, Arthur have changed to Carrie (1895?), Katy (1901) and Arthur (1905?).

In the 1920 US Federal Census here are Kate and her family:
1. RUST, PHILIP (1920 U.S. Census)NJ, HUDSON, 12-WD;
JERSEY CITY, Age: 31, Race: W, Born: NJ,

Philip is working as a plumber in the shipyards.
Kate is age 30 born Norway, came to US in 1892 is naturalized but date of naturalization is unknown
Lillian is their daughter. She was born in New Jersey is aged 3 years 2 months old

Here is a "possible" from the SSDI:
SYVERTSEN, GEORGE 30 Mar 1895 Feb 1963 67 (New Jersey) (none specified) New Jersey 152-01-9859

Good Luck,

Hilsen,
Jackie M.
