I am working on a heritage project for my University, and looking into my mothers side. The entire family has had trouble finding any information past the fourth generation. I have been using ancestry.com and other resources and I do not know what other resources I should be using.

Martin Nyhuse born 1865 in Norway is where the information stops. Martin is the person that traveled to America where our family is now but no one can find any information past him. I know he married a woman also from Norway that he met in Minnesota. The spellings keep changing from Nyhuse to Nyhus when looking for this information.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi

Here is a Martin Nyhus who left Norway April 4, 1884 and was going to Beaver Creek.

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&personpostnr=61313&merk=61313

He was born around 1864/1865 and residence was Kristiania (Oslo). He might have been born somewhere else.
Do you know the date your Martin was born?

Nyhus/Nyhuus is a farmname and rather common. I found 152 farms with this name alone or in combinations in the 1865 census.

Martin was born in 1865 and as far as our records go he was from Trondheim. I am really curious to find out who his parents were and find out what history I can about the family in Norway. I believe he came over with a brother but I am still digging up more information.

From the slight information I've gathered it looks like Martin came over as a young boy. Some records indicate that Martin was as young as 5 others he is as old as nine. No parents have been mentioned which is making my search extremely difficult.

Thank you for your help.

Alyson - Start with WHERE in Minnesota he lived. He must show up in US censuses there. A number of those censuses collected information about WHEN immigrated to the US.

Then what names did he give to his children? First born son, second born son?, first born daughter, second born daughter?

Is your Martin the one living in Lincoln Co. MN in the 1900 US census? If yes, then he also had an older brother or relative who immigrated to the US the same year and lived in that county -- Ole Nyhus.

Yes, Ole is the brother that we believe he emigrated with. I found a few of the people we believe to be the children, on the census he never listed who his parents were. He had about 11 children I know of ...

The 1865 census for Nord Trøndelag has an Ole Johnsen and his wife Beret Olsdatter, which appears to be your relation. See # 795 thru 799.

Good find, Les.
Ole Johnsen and Beret Olsdatter were married May 22 1862, see #4.
Their first child John was born out of wedlock.
Martin Nyhus and brother Ole O Nyhus in the 1880 census, Minnehaha.

I agree, good find Les. Many persons from Meråker emigrated to Minnehaha Co. in the Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). In the 1900 US census both Martin Nyhuse and older brother Ole Nyhus list that their first children 3 or 4 were born in Dakota.

The boy "Bennie" was later known as Bernard Nyhus or Nyhuse and he died 1953 in Washington state. The death certificate shows his birth year as 1888, lists his father as Martin Nyhus and mother as "Corina Krogstad" (obviously should have read Gurina).

Minnesota online death certificate index lists that Gurina Nyhuse died 1938 in Lincoln Co. MN. Obtaining the complete death certificate might provide much more information about her parentage, etc.

- did he really? the time span is 32 years! - he would have been only 13 years when the first child was born! - or do I misunderstand the posting?

Actually the birth years for his oldest son, Bennie, appears in the 1900 US census as 1878 -- BUT very lightly overwritten can be seen that it reads 1888. The 1888 year makes much more sense and is probably correct, the census enumerator having made an error.

In the 1910 US census the oldest son (name given as Melvin B?) is 21 years old.

In the 1920 US census the oldest son, Bernard, is listed as 31 years old.

The 1900 census is in error.

Mrs. Martin Nyhuse was born in Minnesota of Norwegian emigrant parents. She was born about Dec 1869 or in1870. This information is listed in each of the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses.

The son Bernard's death certificate lists his mother as a Krogstad.

The 1880 US census for Minnehaha Co. Dakota Territory shows a Krogstad family which includes a 10 year old daughter, born in Minnesota, named Gurina. (Whoever was trying to read that census to create an online index thought her name was Carina - but those of us used to Norwegian given names can read the handwriting as Gurina.)
